Millions of e-files have been in pending on servers since early January.  The IRS just opened yesterday on 1/26 to begin to accept/reject e-files.   It will take several days of that backlog to clear up.   You will always find someone whose e-file was randomly accepted before yours and someone whose e-file was randomly accepted after yours.   Watch your emails.   When you e-file your return you will get two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say your return has been transmitted; the second one will tell you the IRS has accepted  or rejected your federal e-file.  If you filed a state return, there will be a third email (usually a day or two later) that tells you if the state e-file was accepted or rejected.   Check your e-file status:   https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/

I had this same problem, and after spending 3 sessions on the phone for a total of over 3 hours with 3 different Turbo Tax experts (the last one being extremely helpful and effective - shout out to James), I have an answer. If you need to amend your 2023 tax return, and you used the Turbo Tax online version, you CANNOT amend your return online. It is impossible. I was told that any amendment prior to 2025 must use the desktop Turbo Tax version for the year you are amending. For me, that meant that I needed to purchase the 2023 desktop version of Turbo Tax. This is not something I ever would have found out if not for calling a Turbo Tax expert multiple times. Now, I am left seeing if I can actually figure out how to amend my return (especially without having to input again all of my information. Good luck, out there. You'll need it,

We'll automatically generate and fill out Form 8606 (Nondeductible IRAs) if you reported any of these on your tax return: Nondeductible contributions made to a traditional IRA Distributions from a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA that had nondeductible contributions (not including rollovers, conversions, recharacterizations, qualified charitable distributions, one-time distribution to fund an HSA, or return of certain contributions) Conversions from a traditional, SEP, or SIMPLE IRA to a Roth IRA Distributions from a Roth IRA (other than rollovers, recharacterizations, or a return of certain contributions) However, you'll have to download and print Form 8606, manually fill it out (instructions), and print and file your return, if any of these three situations apply to you: You received a distribution from an inherited traditional IRA that had nondeductible contributions. You transferred an inherited plan account to a Roth IRA. You received a distribution from an inherited Roth IRA that was not a qualified distribution. How to Trigger form 8606 in TurboTax

You will have to wait for the IRS to either Accept or Reject your filed federal tax return. If the return is rejected you can make the necessary changes and e-file again. If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return. Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.
