Thank you for this very thorough response!  I wish to establish new everything--residency and domicile.  I've lived in MA for a long time now and want to break ties here and live in a new state and set up a new life.  I will be doing seasonal work in SD, but if I decide I want to stay in SD and set up there, I wondered if I'd still owe income tax to MA.   Again, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions!

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.    You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed. You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return. Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return. The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected. You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment Select your product below and follow the instructions.  Amend TurboTax Online  Amend TurboTax CD/Download

Yes, TurboTax can be used for that situation.   Many ex-pats use TurboTax.   Understand that in order to pay TurboTax fees or purchase TT software, you need a U.S. based bank account.  And if you are receiving an income tax refund, the IRS will not make a direct deposit to a foreign bank account.  If you do not have a U.S. bank account for a direct deposit then IRS will only mail a check to the address on your tax return.
I would confirm with the issuer of the 1099-R. If it was a 401(k), that IRA/SEP/Simple box should not be checked.

Yes.  You can still file past years tax returns by downloading the software for those years.  You will not be able to e-file, you will need to print and mail your return.     You can only claim a refund for the past 3 years, at this point only returns for 2022 and later can you claim a refund.     If you owe money, there is no limit on how far back you should go and pay the taxes.  An unfiled tax return is forever collectible by the IRS.

Yes.  You are a US citizen and as such you are required to file the same tax return that you have always filed claiming all of the income that you earn worldwide.     You will be able to claim a foreign earned income exclusion for income earned outside the US or you can claim a foreign tax credit for taxes paid to foreign countries that is taxed by the US.  But the income earned from US sources - like your rental income - is taxed the same as if you lived here.   In order for TurboTax to function you will need a US address and phone number.  You may want to find a friend or relative that will allow you to get mail at their home before you leave the country so that you can use that address to file your taxes.   @ShajeerN

Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year.  They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them.  Software for past years is available back to 2021.  Any earlier years can only be prepared on paper forms by hand--and those refunds have been forfeited now.   The current online program can only be used for a 2024 return--no other year.  And if you did not file a timely 2023 return you will have trouble e-filing 2024.  When it asks for your 2023 AGI try using zero.  If zero does not work then you have to print, sign and mail 2024.     You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2024 only.   Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and  2023 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
Were you able to get this entered into the correct area?
can I file past years returns?
You will need to contact your employer. They may need to issue you a corrected W2.

It's a refund for the business.  So you are entitled to the money and a federal tax refund is not taxable income.  So all you have to do is figure out how to cash the check.  If you don't have a business bank account anymore I would go back to the bank where you did have it and see about either cashing the check or re-opening the bank account long enough to deposit the check and then withdraw the cash and close the account.   @cfinvests

Hello,   I have been using TurboTax for the past 5 years to file taxes. However, I will be moving abroad this year to UAE, and I will need to file for tax return on the income I was earning here in the US till I left, as well as on the income I will be earning in UAE as an expat. I also expect to have rental income from a property here in the US. Can TurboTax help with filing my taxes, given my situation outlined above?   Thank you.
