Since your child is a dependent, their filing requirements depend on their earned income and unearned income. For 2025, a dependent must file a federal tax return if:
Their earned income exceeds $14,600.
Their unearned income exceeds $1,300.
Their gross income is more than the larger of $1,300 or their earned income (up to $14,150) plus $450.
Since your child's earned income is $5,665, they do not need to file a federal tax return based on income alone. However, they may want to file if they qualify for a refund or other credits.
New Jersey State Tax Return Filing
New Jersey requires a tax return if a resident's gross income exceeds $10,000 for single filers. Since your child's earned income is below this threshold, they do not need to file a NJ state tax return unless they had NJ tax withheld and want a refund.
Filing Separately as a Non-Dependent
If your child files separately as a non-dependent, you would lose the ability to claim them as a dependent, which could impact your tax situation. However, if removing them as a dependent saves you $250, it might be worth considering.
Implications of Filing Separately
Residency Status: Your child is still considered a NJ resident since they live there when not in school. Their college attendance in NY does not automatically make them a NY resident.
State Tax Obligations:
If they earned income in NJ, they would file a NJ tax return.
If they earned income in NY, they may need to file a NY tax return as a nonresident.
If they earned income in both states, they might need to file both.
Since their summer job income was $5,665, it's important to check where they worked. If it was in NJ, they would only need to file in NJ (if required). If it was in NY, they may need to file a NY nonresident return.
Let us know if this answers your question.

It depends. If there was local tax withheld in box 19, you should enter which local tax was paid or use the dropdown menu in Box 20. It will usually be the locality you worked or lived in. Depending on the state, you may also need to enter special abbreviations depending on what taxes you pay as determined by your school district, city, municipality, or other local mandates. This detailed information will be shown once you use the dropdown menu to choose your associated state. To access the information, click on the question mark next to Box 20 - Locality name. If you choose Ohio, for example, TurboTax will provide you with all the possible school district tax numbers, CCA codes, and RITA codes in the pop-up.

Just had the same experience. I had to pay for this service although I always DIY. Have never used the extra services. This year was extra dubious! Totally unaware that you are getting scammed until you have finished and ready to file! Been using Turbotax for many years. They have shamelessly devolved into opportunist preditors now, it appears! After happily using them for over a decade... I am now currently researching alternatives for future filings. Anyone know a more upfront, honest way to file online??

You had tax withheld from the distributions from the retirement account, just like when an employer withheld tax from your paychecks. When you enter it all into the software, the calculations are done to reconcile the amount of income you received and the amount of tax that was withheld. You might owe more or you might get a refund.

If you are using TurboTax Online you can also clear any debris behind the scenes using the information below.
In this situation, first please try clearing the cookies and cache. It handles many issues that seem nonsensical on a regular basis with online activity.
Close your TurboTax return first.
Watch to be sure you are selecting 'all time' as example. Do not use selections like 'last hour' for those browsers that give you options.
How to clear your cache
Once this is complete open your return and try again.
If you are using TurboTax Desktop, save your return, then at the top select Online, then Check for updates.

“We Won't Be Able to E-file Your Return Why? Well, it looks like you have a tax situation in the New York return that makes it ineligible for e-filing. Reason for e-file ineligibility: E-filing an amended return Form IT-201-X when IT-201 has not been e-filed. TurboTax does not support this information to be filed electronically.” These are what’s written on the page you directed me to—what should I do?

You will be able to access the 2023 return you started by using the exact same account and user ID that you used when you started it. But you can no longer use online software for any further changes.
Start a 2024 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.
Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2023 returns is now permanently closed.
Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2023 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac (not to a mobile device). Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you already paid for your online software you can ask customer support for a download of the desktop software.
They are available from 5 a.m. to 9p.m. Pacific time daily

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late. If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe. Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Changing the Security settings (including turning off firewall entirely) did not work, still seeing Error 2 for the ~50th time. I am using the installed Desktop edition, TurboTax Premium. I don't understand all the comments about "uploading" PDF files - I didn't upload anything, TurboTax made all the files for filing. Hence I don't see any way to reduce the size of the file that is internal to TurboTax. Anyone using Desktop (not browser) found an answer to this, a way to get around the Error? Today is tax day, and I have been trying to get this working all last evening. I need to get this figured out!
