Q. Can I claim the Lifetime Learning Credit? I am no longer claimed as a dependent by my parents, but they pay my tuition.
A. Yes. Although the general rule, in taxes, is that you must be the one making the payment, to get the deduction or credit, there is an exception for education.
Who can claim a dependent's education expenses? If a student is claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, all qualified education expenses of the student are treated as having been paid by that person. Therefore, only that person can claim an education credit for the student. If a student is not claimed as a dependent on another person's tax return, only the student can claim a credit.
But, whomever does claim him, whether it be the parent or the student himself, he may count the tuition and expenses, paid by others, in claiming the credit for themselves.

@ caseybam wrote: I can open my 2023 tax return because it says it's already been filed. I have my printed copy but don't see the signature pin on the paperwork. How can I find my 2023 pin because my 2024 return is rejected every time I try to filed my 2024 taxes with error message IND-032-04. I have checked the AGI and it is exactly what is on line 11 of my 2023 tax return. Are you filing a married joint return? That rejection code indicates a spouse problem. You don't have to have the self-select signing PIN from last year. IND-032-04: The spouse's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year doesn't match IRS records. It is most likely the spouse's 2023 AGI causing the problem. How did you both file in 2023--was it a married joint return last year? If the 2023 return was a joint return, then you both have the same total 2023 AGI. Do not divide it. If you have tried that first, and if it didn't work, then use the total 2023 AGI for the primary filer, and for the spouse use a 2023 AGI of 0 (zero) and see if that works. If you were not married last year and filed as single or filed married and separately, then you would each have your own 2023 AGI's from your separate returns last year. If that's your situation, and if you already tried that but it didn't work, try $0 for the spouse 2023 AGI. Also, in order to "sign" the return, you will both be asked to enter any 5-digit PIN of your choosing, consisting of any 5 digits, except it can't be all zeros. It's on a screen with "today's date" and your birth date.

When i was entered my crypto investments with csv file I get from koinly, it said I was allowed to deduct $3000 in deductions against my income this year, but turbo tax didn't apply it. How do I apply it? Also my income is self-employment income, not from a job. thanks

Your online TurboTax fees are the same whether you e-file or mail the return in an envelope. The fee is for using the software; there was no extra fee for e-filing.

I have tried: Wells Fargo, Wells Fargo Advisors and First Clearing. Each one gives a different error. I should be using the Advisors one as it's an investment account, not a savings/checking account. However, the "Wells Fargo" pops up a login window, lists my accounts and looks like it's going to work, then gets an error to try back. This has occured for multiple days over the course of a week, so assume it's not a resource/web availability thing. Very frustrated - anyone find a workaround ? Turbo Tax says they're working on it, but I have little confidence.

How do I go back into my turbo tax filing & see what payment method was assigned at the time of filing? The amount I owed on Federal just came out of an account I do not remember linking.
