Thanks everyone for your comments! I’ve decided to not pursue this. Too many variables and nothing definitive. Not worth it to take the chance for for an audit.

@M-MTax  Doesn't IRC 469 (c)(4)  block TPs other than real estate pros as treating rental real estate as a nonpassive activity  (c)(2)Passive activity includes any rental activity Except as provided in paragraph (7), the term “passive activity” includes any rental activity. (c)(4)Material participation not required for paragraphs (2) and (3) Paragraphs (2) and (3) shall be applied without regard to whether or not the taxpayer materially participates in the activity.
I ordered quicken online but I need a download Turbo Tax by mistake. How to download Turbo tax 2024 only to download on to do my online taxes.
use this website:    https://www.dinkytown.net/java/1040-tax-calculator.html   or use the 2025 Desktop version in Forms View.  The 1099-B works fine.

@Opus 17 wrote: But the key question is do they have a rating in the IEEC code for 2023   I wouldn't trust anything a window salesman says to me about taxes,    I completely agree with both points.   I've had salesman dogmatically TELL me something about the tax benefits, and I automatically will not work with that company (even if they are correct).  I bought solar panels and the salesman told me "As I understand it ... but check with your tax professional to make sure that is correct", and I thought that was a great approach.
Same deal, both have customers and they are the ones who pay the bills, not listening or respecting them doesn't always end up well for the company.

@AmeliesUncle wrote: ......which is why I asked for more details about why she thinks it should be non-passive. You asked the right questions because, thinking about it, there are quite a few users who hold the (mistaken) belief that material participation is sufficient.    My original post was based on the couple of users both of us responded to who did have short-term rentals (but were not REPs) and were trying to get the program to treat them as nonpassive (which it won't unless you use Forms Mode).

@AmeliesUncle wrote: @Opus 17 wrote: They would only qualify if they are "a system designed primarily and specifically to reduce heat gain or loss".  And if they are such a system (I have doubts) then it doesn't matter if they are interior or exterior.     The OP said these are "plantain shutters", which are pretty similar to blinds.  Both are often considered to be primarily to reduce heat gain (at least by the manufacturers; owners usually view the primary purpose as privacy).     I know what they are, I have plantation shutters on some of my windows, installed by the previous owner (mostly the ones facing the front or side, they didn't install them on the back where no one could see).   I think they probably do prevent heat gain if closed in the summer (but then the room is dark, do you turn on a light, how does that work out?).  Not sure they prevent heat loss in the winter, since you need them open for light.  But the key question is do they have a rating in the IEEC code for 2023?     I wouldn't trust anything a window salesman says to me about taxes, nor would I trust my accountant to install windows.

I'm using turbotax 25 When I try to import, I get the following message:   This import was unsuccessful. We recommend you check your internet connection and try again. If we still can't get your info, don't worry. We'll help you enter it manually so you can keep working on your taxes.   my connection is fine and I would like to avoid re-entering all the basic data again.

@MCSmith1974 wrote:   A taxpayer can materially participate in a rental activity and therefore be non-passive without meeting the real-estate-professional thresholds.   Why do you say that?  Do you have special circumstances, such as short-term rental that would make it NOT a "rental activity" or have enough personal use of the property that may make it not a rental activity?  Or are you doing certain grouping elections with your business?   Material Participation in a "rental activity" does NOT make it non-passive.   Or am I misunderstanding your situation or what you are asking about?   Publication 925 [see also §469(c)(2)], under "Passive Activities" says:   There are two kinds of passive activities. Trade or business activities in which you don’t materially participate during the year. Rental activities, even if you do materially participate in them, unless you’re a real estate professional.   https://www.irs.gov/publications/p925#en_US_2024_publink1000104565

That webpage is for training for US taxes.  Are you interested in training for US taxes or for Canadian taxes?  If you are interested in the US taxes, you could try using a VPN to make the website think you are in the US.   If you are interested in training for Canadian taxes, I don't know if Intuit has such training or not.  Googling doesn't seem to show anything that is available.   Unfortunately, I have no idea why Intuit would be sending you those emails, but my experience has been that their email-marketing department has been extremely shoddy and misleading, with many emails that are wrong.  In fact, I just received an email today from Intuit that has a link that leads to something that is not-applicable and outdated.

E-filing for 2024 is closed.  The only way to file a 2024 return now is by mail.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

I am an Indian and have been in the US for the past year on a J-1 visa. Today I got a message from IBKR regarding the W8 form. A small position <$40 is open, but I haven't traded anything in the last 3 years. Do I need to update my US tax residency in IBKR, where it asks for my SSN and everything, and fill out the tax form?
