You may not owe any tax to South Carolina, as sometimes your employer will withhold the exact amount of tax you owe on the state return, as it is much simpler than the federal return. I suggest you look at your South Carolina tax return summary and see if the correct amount of income and deductions is showing there as follows:   While working on your state return:   Choose Tax Tools from your left menu bar in TurboTax Online while working in your program Choose Tools Choose View Tax Summary

I agree. I found it very frustrating to have to:   1. Search for the topic in Turbo Tax 2. Be given a wrong answer (it said to type "extend" into search topics and "answer Yes on the Applying for an Extension screen and then select Continue." There was no such thing. 3. Search the internet. 4. Arrive at this page and find that it won't file an extension for me. 5. Log in to TurboTax Online. 6. Dodge all the attempts to get me to pay for something I have paid for already. 7. Enter ALL of my personal information again. 8. Dodge more attempts to get me to buy stuff. 9. Finally get an e-mail saying that I have filed an extension. That's unprofessional and makes TurboTax feel amateurish. I used to enjoy using TurboTax when there was the video walkthrough with the presenter explaining each step simply and clearly. Now I spend half my time using AI or Google to try to understand what TurboTax is saying to me. The biggest advantage to TurboTax is that I don't see any better option. But I am increasingly disappointed in the product over recent years.  I get that taxes are (unnecessarily) complicated and Intuit has to cover a lot of situations. But even simple things like filing an extension become difficult. I suppose this is a deliberate attempt to move us to the web-based version, but I'm more comfortable working with the app/program.

Hi again!   I was able to amend my 2023 taxes and they corrected my 1099-R 2024 form as well. I paid the 6% penalty on $29 for both 2023 and 2024 tax years.   This 2025 tax year, I received the 2025 Form 1099-R with code J and P instead of just code J like you stated above. They placed "$29" in box 1 for gross distribution and "$0.00" for box 2a taxable amount and also checked 2b box for "taxable amount not determined." Is this form inaccurate?   I added it to my 2025 taxes and it did not charge me taxes on the $29 and then when I add it to my 2024 amended taxes, it also does not change any values.    I asked for an extension for my 2025 taxes since I want to make sure this form is accurate with the codes J and P before I submit both my 2024 amended taxes and my 2025 amended taxes.   Thank you once again for all of your help!!

No. You both do not need to file. Since she is your dependent, you must include Form 8962 using the information from Form 1095-A to reconcile the premium tax credit.   Your daughter is not required to file a tax return. However, if there was Federal withholding from her $4,000, she might want to file a simple return just to get that money back as a refund. Even then, she is still your dependent, so you would be the one reporting the 1095-A.

I can promise you the issue is real.  I was not able to solve this myself.  I managed to kludge a workaround but I have serious doubts about using TurboTax next year.  This was a very basic thing that your QA team should have caught.  I'll be looking at alternatives next April 15.  I urge others to consider the same.

Use the interview section for the program to put the numbers in the right places. Let me explain how NC calculates your tax liability using your full income and your NC part. For example: NC tax on your federal income is $8,000 But only 10% of your income was earned in NC NC tax liability will be 10% of $8,000 or $800.  Let me get you to preview your return and check. If you are using the online version: go to Tax Tools, then select Tools, select View Tax Summary, on the left side, select Preview My NC State In the desktop program, switch to forms mode.  Keep going and you will see the NC percentage come into play The Federal AGI is used as a denominator and the NC only income as the numerator to calculate the percentage of income earned in NC . NC determines the tax on your entire federal income, then multiplies the tax times the percentage just determined to create your actual tax.
