All distributions from a retirement plan are considered to be "income" as defined in the tax code.  However, rolling over the distribution makes this income be nontaxable income, so it has no effect on your tax return other than being required to be included on Form 1040 line 5a.  It's excluded from taxable income on line 5b.

@CatinaT1 thanks for the update, where can we follow along to see this information for ourselves? This is the only acknowledgement of an issue I've received from TurboTax, and the rumor mill of user reports via an online forum is not a practical way to confidently file tax returns. Thanks.

@MaryK4  Thank you!  I've realized that line 4 of the worksheet (year end value of traditional IRA) is very high because in addition to my non-deductible contributions, I also had a pension plan rollover into my traditional IRA.  I'm converting all of my non-traditional contributions and some of the rollover and as a result, the non-taxable portion is just 16%.  Is this correct?  Should I seek advice to deal with this somewhat unique situation?

TurboTax gives you the option to import your transactions by connecting directly to your bank and credit cards to find eligible expenses. Link to your account and sign in, and TurboTax will take care of the rest. See this TurboTax help article with video.   Once your transactions are downloaded, you’ll be able to review and categorize them before they’re added to your tax return to ensure you get all the potential deductions you can.   If you’d rather or need to enter your transactions manually, gather your receipts, invoices, or bank statements and choose Type in my expenses.

MY STATE REFUND WAS LESS THAN I EXPECTED The state will send you a letter explaining the change.  TurboTax does not get any feedback from your state after your return is accepted, so no one at TT knows why your state refund was less.   Did you owe back taxes, child support, or student loans?  Traffic fines, etc.?     https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0

If I change the HSA adjustment to 0.  Turbotax says I owe CA $220.  That doesn't sound right.

You need to start entering some basic Personal Info in 2025 for the side menu to open up. Just continue a little ways into 2025. I had to go though about 12 screens. If you used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online. So you need to make and keep your own backups. Or request a transcript from the IRS https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript Or get a copy of your return using form 4506 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

The $24,000 contribution must be entered as $23,500 regular contribution and $500 of catch-up contribution.   Also, each partner's self-employment income must be present with code A in box 14 of the Schedule K-1.  For the 30% partner that would have to be an amount greater than or equal to $24,000 plus the deductible portion of self-employment taxes.   For the 70% partner the amount with code A in box 4 of the Schedule K-1 would have to be at least $7,500 plus the deductible portion of SE taxes.

I have read several similar questions on this forum and elsewhere, but I haven't found quite a clear answer. I am married filing jointly. My spouse, who will not be able to claim the AOTX because of claiming it 4 times before, paid tuition for Spring 2025 in December 2024. She received scholarships for that semester in January. And so, on this years 1089-T, Box 1 = $0, and Box 5 = $$$. All the scholarships were used for tuition. Are those scholarships taxable because tuition was paid in 2024 rather than 2025, and scholarships were received in 2025? Or would it be okay because it is allocable to this academic period? If that is not taxable, which I am very much hoping, ... do I even need to submit the 1098-T? If I were to submit it, could I adjust it by adding the Spring 2025 tuition into the "Amount I actually paid" box? If it helps, she did not claim the AOTX in 2024 either. Thanks for your help.
