If this is the case, then this will require filing the New York state return manually, as TurboTax will not have the required form and it needs to be filled out and printed separately.

My principal residence burned down in January 2025 in a nationally declared wildfire disaster. My wife and I lived there for 30 years, so our cost basis is less than the insurance payout.  We are almost done rebuilding the house, which is costing more than the insurance payout. My questions are: 1. Since it is our principal residence, do we need to file the casualty loss/gain form to report the insurance proceeds? 2. Since it is an involuntary conversion of our princiapl residence, do we even need to report the insurance payout? 3. How do we account for the cost of the rebuild, much of which has not been reimbursed by insurance?  4. We temporarily invested the insurance payout and received interest, so how do we minimize the interest on our taxes? Thank you.

To see exactly what happened, look at your Form 1040, Line 28 and compare it to Schedule 8812:   Check Form 8606: Open the "Forms" view in your software and look for Form 8606, Part III. Line 22 should show your "Basis" (the $12k or more). Line 25b (Taxable amount) should be $0. If Line 25b has a number in it, the software thinks you withdrew "Earnings," which are taxable and will reduce your credits, including the Additional Child Tax Credit Check for Form 5329: If you see this form in your return, it means the software is charging you a penalty (the 10% early withdrawal penalty or the 6% excise tax). This might be where your $400 went. To remedy this:   Go to the Deductions & Credits tab, find Retirement and Investments, and select Traditional and Roth IRA Contributions. Follow the screens until it asks: "Enter your net Roth IRA contributions prior to 2025." Enter the total amount of money you have ever put into your Roth IRAs. Once the software sees that your "Basis" is higher than your "Withdrawal," that $400 should reappear in your refund.

Itemized federal medical expenses are only deductible for the amount that is over 7.5% of your AGI.  This means if your AGI is $100,000, then you would only see medical expenses that are OVER $7,500 included on your Schedule A as the itemized medical expense.  So the system will take all of the eligible medical expenses that you enter it and compare it to 7.5% of your AGI and use the amount over that.
