You are able to review the California Military Retired Pension Exclusion in TurboTax, in the California state income tax return. The exclusion may be found at the screen Any Pension or Annuity Adjustments. Do you have a question? The California Franchise Board states: For taxable years beginning on or after January 1, 2025, and before January 1, 2030, California allows qualified taxpayers to exclude from gross income up to $20,000 of retirement pay from the federal government for service in the uniformed services or annuity payments received pursuant to a U.S. Defense Department Survivor Benefit Plan.

My Review says I need to complete the Smart Worksheet portion, but I don't know where to find that information. I don't recall receiving that form from the employer.

If the Social Security number in box 2 of the SSA-1099 is not yours, you cannot enter that SSA-1099 on your tax return. The SSA-1099 must match your Social Security number to be reported on your return. Payments from your mom typically are not taxable income and should not be added to your income unless they are for services or income-producing activities.

As indicated in an earlier post, you don't need to upgrade in TurboTax Desktop since all the forms and schedules are available. There will be various screens that will ask if you want to upgrade to Premier or continue with Deluxe. An example would be entering stock sales in TurboTax Deluxe.
Your question is on an old thread and instruction changes may occur from year to year. It is best to start a new question in the current year (2026).

David, thank you for your reply. The compiled 1099-INT I received contained eight different states from which I received 2025 muni interest payments, After entering the data from each state into TT's 1099-INT interview with each state's digraph and interest amount paid and received through one brokerage, upon running the error check prior to filing, the consolidated 1099-INT flagged it for having the incorrect MX state digraph. My state does not tax munies, and all states that paid interest were entered with their correct digraph. TT created the MX, but doesn't want me to submit what it entered. I'd like to get this filed but don't know whether to ignore the MX, change it in the form to one of the state codes, or remove the MX from the form and submit it blank. Any advice received will be appreciated as the issue seems to be one internal within TT.
