No. You can’t claim the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit if you’re claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. Also, the same expenses can't be claimed twice on separate tax returns. Here are 2 articles you may find helpful: Education credits - AOTC and LLC, How do Education Tax Credits Work?

No, there is not federal tax credit for paying rent. Depending on which state you live in, there might be. Which state do you live in?

Well it's April 7 and I've disabled my firewall/antivirus, my Windows 10 is up to date, and I've made sure TT is updated as well, restarted my modem/router, etc. Still get the import unsuccessful "internal server error" message. I didn't buy TT so I could MANUALLY input everything (Vanguard statement a lot - 1099B and 1099Div and foreign stuff as well). I couldn't import my W2s this year either. Seems like every year there is another glitch that makes the reasons I pay for TT null/void. As it seems TT doesn't really care about this (given the lack of support on this thread), I will def be looking for another product next year.. If I hadn't already put in a lot of info, I'd switch right this minute.

I'm not using Turbo Tax Online. I bought the download. Most of those links would not apply, but I will try the suggested fix in the second one when I get back to my computer. Thank you.

Are you sure your return wasn't rejected for another reason?
Here's how you can fix it:
Sign in to your account and select the Fix my return button. Follow any “fix it” instructions to update the information causing the rejection.
Note: Not all rejections will have explicit guides to fix the information. You’ll need to navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection.
Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed. In this case, your only option would be to print and mail in your return. This article will give you instruction on how to print and mail your return.
Additional reject instruction here.
