Thank you very much. I was able to go the the form that is calculating the estimate amount.   So, it looks like IRS wants us to pay the estimate tax evenly even though we don't know how much in advance, and penalize us for not seeing the future, it looks like. The transactions that resulted in a higher than anticipated income was in the thired quarter. and that's why I paid most of the estimate tax in Q4. (No need to respond. I'm just complaining about the tax system. I know TurboTax didn't make it 🙂 )

Thank you for clarifying. Do you remember if you were able to do that with TurboTax or did you have to use other software/file on paper? I'm asking because I can't get TurboTax to let me file as a full-time resident of two states.

I see this problem asked a few times but no solutions for me. I want to apply a refund to my estimated taxes. I enter the refund on the 1040/1040SR Wks and that updates my 1040 (as an aside why does one have to enter this manually, it should have to option to just apply refund). But this does not affect the Estimated Tax vouchers nor does it carry over to the Est Tax Options where there is a line for Last year's overpayment you apply to this year (which can't be entered manually). I know there is a solution as I ran into this problem before but it escapes me what it is.   Thanks for any help.

Hi I have a weird issue here . I had filed my 2024 federal refund with turbo tax with the 5 days early deposit which I got just fine. Then I filed an amended return for 2024 it was received and the irs processed the return for 4/5(today) which is shows on my turbo tax and transcript. When I called the irs the agent told me the amended refund for 2024 was sent to cross river bank which is the same bank TurboTax used to process my original 2024 refund 5 days early however I haven’t gotten my amended refund and am wondering what to even do at this point . I spoke with 2 turbo tax agents, they didn’t know anything except to wait or try Santa Barbara tax group(they have no record of anything I checked)

It really wasn't an issue for my NC software...it works either way   But in the NC software, if I break out PR&NC amounts separately, then it just doesn't include either the NC or PR $$ amounts in the Other state's $$ added-back as state income (what would be your PIT-RES line 2).  SO for me, the PR $$ are already excluded.   Then My US Obligations, to be subtracted from NC income, (your PIT-RES line 5)......for NC, that only includes $$ from box 3 on 1099-INT forms + US obligation amounts extracted from box 1a on 1099-DIV forms.   ____________________ (The NC software does miss any 1099-INT box 1 $$ from the TVA,  and certain other US-Backed Organizations ((FDIC, FLB, FFB etc) that I have to enter directly on the NC worksheet in Forms Mode using Desktop software)

Yes, you can still claim it as a rental while it was undergoing repairs, if your intent was for the property to remain a rental.  You would claim the repairs the same way you claim other expenses for a rental, as repairs and maintenance.  Since the repairs took more than a year, it raises the question of whether some, or all of the expenditures for "repairs" are improvements, or repair and maintenance expenses.  If improvements, they need to be capitalized and depreciated.

If you are a non-married couple who live together with your child, then only one of you can claim the child(ren) and the one not claiming the child does not enter anything at all on their tax return about the child.   The “sharing” of child-related credits you may have heard about is only possible between divorced or never married parents who live apart and share custody and who have a written agreement to share the credits.    The child’s SSN can only be entered on one tax return.   Any other return with the child’s SSN on it will be rejected.   If you are a family, then work out how to share the refund between yourselves.

Hey,   I ended up filing tax returns in both states. I only owed $7 to Virginia. Not sure why I had to file if I didn't make any income in the state, but seems like no harm, no foul.   Just realize I didn't really answer your question. Somehow I got it to work. I think I may have just added another entry for the second state when I got to the state tax section, but can't remember exactly.

TurboTax update fails with Windows updater code 1603.  Specified steps to address this by downloading manual update and troubleshooting .NET Framework did not solve the problem. Was able to work on taxes by bypassing update and that was ok until trying to submit/file the taxes. There was no option to bypass the uptate there. Two long sessions with support did not resolve the issue. Support supposedly filed a critical item with engineering and also  referred me to the JustAsk site for other ideas.  No joy. I was able to complete the taxes because we have another computer, same configuration, where the updates were successful and able to file the taxes. After many years of using TurboTax I may have to rethink for next year..

Enter at Educational Expenses and Scholarships, under Deductions and credits (not the income section). After answering no to having a 1098-T*, answer yes to qualifying for an exception (that gets you to the entry screens). You will have to go thru the whole education interview to get to the scholarship screen. At the scholarship screen, enter the amount of the grant. When asked if any was used for room and board, answer yes. Then enter the amount you want to be taxable (usually all of it), in the pop up box. R&B are not "qualified educational  expenses".  So, this is how you tell TT that it is taxable. Note the wording at that screen “or other expenses”. You didn’t have to literally use the scholarship for R&B.  This will put it on line 8r of Schedule 1 (this line was added in 2022).   *If you do have a 1098-T, one of the follow-up questions will be do you have any scholarships not shown on the 1098-T. Enter the additional scholarship/stipend there.
