Q. “This is not what (me) paid to this school.” I’m not sure whether I should check this box, since I didn’t pay out of pocket—everything is managed by the university, and I only receive a payslip.
A. Do NOT check that box.
Q. When I check that box, it then asks me to “Enter the full amount of tuition paid to Georgetown University. Include all amounts paid by me, someone else, scholarships, fellowships, and student loans.” I’m not sure if this is the right step or what amount I should enter there.
A. Do not change what's there.

Hello, I received a TSP distribution in 2024 from the death of an older sibling. I am working on the PA state taxes and TurboTax is asking “What kind of retirement income do you have from Pennsylvania?”. Box 7 of my 1099-R has code 4. How do I answer this question in TurboTax? This is my first time receiving a distribution and I am not at retirement age (under 59 1/2 still), but many websites say that TSP distributions are not taxable in PA. Is this also true? Thank you for your help with this.

if you return has been accepted I don't think you should be too concerned about whether the 8453 made it by today. Personally, I doubt they even look at this below a certain threshold, or that you will ever hear about this again, and this PO BOX is probably inundated with mailings from TT users, likely exacerbated this year by all the problems with importing 1099s. From what I've seen in this forum, a lot of this 8453 is avoidable, TT encourages jamming all 1099s into sales summaries, but any adjustment to a summary will then trigger this 8453 mailing as it is missing the details. This is avoidable by entering these adjustments/exceptions (wash sales, AMD, noncovered categories) as "one by one" (and the remaining balance of the 1099 as a clean unadjusted sales summary) which sends the detail electronically on Form 8949 with your return. as for payments @buteo35 was concerned about his check, if able going forward you can pay electronically and this will likely be mandated going forward as Trump issued exec order to largely eliminate checks from this process. I've been paying electronically for some years, no vouchers, no USPS. Just beware the IRS debits quickly, it will happen overnight after you enter it so ensure the money is in the account. State likely has equivalent process also. https://www.irs.gov/payments https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/03/modernizing-payments-to-and-from-americas-bank-account/

Yes. The numbers that are on the extension are not what's important. The important thing is what you actually pay.

I want to file an amended return to include a new 1099-NEC. I don't see a menu item in the desktop product which includes the word 'Amended'. When I simply add the new info to my existing tax forms using TurboTax, it won't let me file the resulting forms. Not sure if I need to print and send by mail or if another way to file electronically through Turbo Tax

You can complete the Form 2106 to claim employee business expense, but it will not affect your Federal return, unless you fall into a very specific category of employment. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act suspended employee business expenses for tax years 2018 through 2025, but some states still allow the deduction. So, if you enter the information it may be transferred and used on your state return, but not the Federal.
See the following TurboTax help article for more information and instructions:

Please read this TurboTax Help topic on how to start a new tax return for another person.
If you are using TurboTax Online, you cannot prepare and file a tax return for another person using an existing TurboTax account. You'll need to create a new account for each of your sons, distinct from the account you used to file your return.
If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can start a new return for each of your sons by clicking on Start a new return on the Welcome page of TurboTax.

Thanks for the reply. I haven’t entered all my tax information and forms on my return yet … still working on my retirement contributions. As a matter of fact, I had to file for an extension today because I discovered that I made an excess contribution to my Roth IRA and will owe a penalty. In order to remove the penalty, I need to take action either withdrawing or recharacterizing the contributions from Roth to traditional. Not sure how the excess contributions will affect my tax returns. Any thoughts? Or is it hard to say?

Yes my info was saved but I wasn’t able to proceed and print it out until they sent me the link to the TurboTax 2023 program. They did this instead of a refund for me
