It should be ok to enter the max allowed and ask your employer for the difference. It shouldn't affect your tax return.
When you say use the correct total correct amount, do you mean adjust the Box 14 to meet the max amount of 1601.60 and then contact my employer?
Sorry, Combined correct total amount
Yes the max of 1601.60.
I had one employer in 2022 and they took out both VPDI ($1601.60) and CASDI ($132.55) from my paycheck. The total of the two exceeds $1601.60, which is the maximum for 2022. When I was ready to file Turbo Tax Premier Online, I keep getting an error regarding Box 14 and it says I need to correct this before I can file.
I've done a lot of research and found this on the CA FTB website: "If SDI (or VPDI) was withheld from your wages by a single employer, at more than 1.10 percent of your gross wages, you may not claim excess SDI (or VPDI) on your Form 540. Contact the employer for a refund."
I mentioned this to my employer, and asked them to refund the overpayment of $132 to me. They responded saying that they do not owe me this money and that this is a "known issue" with Turbo Tax and that I should find an alternate way to file my taxes.
Can you please confirm if my employer owes me the refund? They are being very problematic with this. Not only am I owed $132 to me, but I also can't file online.
I'm still battling with my employer, but I would like to file. Can I simply delete the "CASDI ($132.55)" from the W2 entry on Turbo Tax? I am concerned about doing that because then my entries won't match my W2. Will that be a problem?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
Yes, you can delete your CASDI. This will allow you to electronically file.
This is not a problem for either federal or state. As Tax Champ VolvoGirl said, the max is $1,601.60.
This is not a "known TurboTax issue." TurboTax is following California law. The Franchise Tax Board must sign off on TurboTax software before it will accept any tax returns. If there is an e-filing error, it means the data is not acceptable to FTB.
Thanks so much for replying. I also thought my employer was wrong when they said it was a "known issue" with Turbo Tax. They are just brushing me off.
So who do I need to get my $132 refund from....my employer or the CA EDD?
Per the CA FTB website, "If one of your employers withheld SDI (or VPDI) from your wages at more than 1.10% of your gross wages, you may not claim excess SDI (or VPDI) on Form 540 or Form 540NR. Contact the employer for a refund."
You employer would be the one who would refund the excessive funds.
