Why don't I see the second half of the Advance Child Tax Credit reflected in my 2021 taxes when I received the advance payments from July to December last year?

I was eligible for (and I received) the first half of the Child Tax Credit from July to December 2021.

Based on my AGI and filing a "married filing jointly" return, I was under the impression that the remaining half of the Child Tax Credit would be reflected in my 2021 return.

In terms of eligibility for the Advance Child Tax Credit, we don't earn more than the max allowed for being married filing jointly.

I have form 6419 for me and my spouse and have entered the information correctly in TurboTax. I finalized all my entries, and TurboTax checked everything over in preparation for filing. TurboTax flagged some empty fields on Schedule 8812 and had me update those. Those fields are related to the the values in box 2 (

The "refund monitor" starts off by giving your all of the stimulus money and all of the child tax credit because the software does not know yet that you received stimulus money or that you received some advance child tax credit payments.    That gets reconciled later.

That "refund monitor" changes as you enter information.      That is normal.   And you cannot take it seriously until you enter ALL of your information---even though it is so tempting to believe that the highest amount is the "right" refund.

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.

The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.

Look at your federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 28.  Does it show the Child Tax Credit?  If so, the credit is included in your federal tax refund or the amount has reduced any federal taxes owed.

Thanks for the tip! I do indeed see the CTC reflected on the 1040.
