I am trying to prepare an amendment to my 2023 return. I'm using the downloaded version of TT. After opening TT 2023 and clicking on the option to amend my return, it opens my old return. However, it populates the 1040-X with bizarre numbers. The numbers in the "Original amount" column are all wrong, but bizarrely the numbers in the "Correct amount" column are, in fact, the original amounts.
In addition, TT revises my original tax file with this new 1040-X without me having saved the file. In other words, it appears that my original 2023 TT file is now gone forever.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.

Your response doesn't answer my question. It appears to be a stock response.
Also, my counters did not return to zero.
You may need to contact Customer Service so they can do a screen share with you. Here is a link: Turbo Tax Customer Service
I followed your suggestion and called Customer Service. It was frustrating. While screen sharing, they saw and confirmed the mistaken values inserted by TT but had no idea why that had occurred. Their only recommendation was for me to manually correct the erroneous values inserted by TT. The problem with that "solution" is that it forces me to review the rest of my amended return, line by line, to try to determine if any other errors or erroneous values have been randomly inserted.
If you check my posting history, you will see I had raised this problem with TT Amended Returns in a previous year. Multiple people then chimed in on that thread stating that they had similar issues with TT Amended Returns. Apparently, TT has done nothing to fix the problem.
There were other issues with the phone support but I am confining this reply to the subject of this thread.
Thanks for your suggestion. I am passing on this feedback in the hope that TT will finally fix this problem with Amended Returns.
I posted earlier today that when I tried to amend a return (2023) that amount due was incorrect.
Said I owed over $10,000 when amount should be about $300. I went back after I read the posting
about the columns being incorrect, and I have the same problem. Garbage numbers in the "original"
column. When I called TurboTax earlier today re problem with amount owed being incorrect they told
me that there couldn't be a problem with their software and that I should consult an accountant or call the
IRS.
I am having the exact same issue! I copied the original file to use for the amended TR and it copied the correct original numbers OK, but as soon as I check the box to amend, it changes the beginning numbers (with the ending numbers being my original numbers). So before updating any numbers, it says I have a $1k refund. This is definitely an issue that Turbo Tax needs to address ASAP.
I'm sorry you're having issues trying to Amend your return. If you're using TurboTax Desktop 2024, try a Manual Update.
If you're trying to Amend 2023, another thing to check is to open your 2023 tax file in the 2023 program, and see if it looks correct. If so, when you click on Amend, are the refund meters changing to $0?
If you're working on 2024, the refund number could go up due to an update that changed something in your return, but definitely your beginning numbers should be the amounts you filed, and there should be no ending numbers if you haven't entered anything. Do your beginning numbers look familiar at all?
Here's more info on How to Amend a Tax Return and How to Undo an Amendment if you want to try again after the manual update. My only other suggestion would be to uninstall/re-install. Be sure you're in Administrator mode and working in your C drive. Here's How to Forcefully Uninstall TurboTax. See below for how you can provide feedback on this.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can also leave feedback at the Final Steps tab:
"the ending numbers being my original numbers). "
If you haven't done anything yet, that is correct.
What happens if you proceed to the needed revision of your tax return. ??
