Unable to Transmit Return

My tax return last year was not able to be efiled. Have you fixed the application? What was the issue. All the fixes I tried did not work. (program suggested) I had to eat my filing fee, and use snail mail to file my taxes. Am I going to have to do that again this year?

@RookieTaxFiler " I had to eat my filing fee, and use snail mail to file my taxes. "

If you used online TurboTax you did not have a "filing fee."  The fees are the same whether you e-file or snail mail.  The fee is for using the software to prepare your tax return--there is no extra fee to e-file it.  The only time there is any e-file fee at all is if you use desktop (CD/download) software--then there is a fee for e-filing only the state return.

You have not said what your e-filing issue was so we do not know if you will have the same problem again.  Some e-file problems are "un-fixable"  -- like duplicate Social Security numbers or wrong AGI or PIN's.  Some rejection issues can be fixed and the return can then be e-filed.

Unable to Transmit Return

Some research will need to be done to see what the actual error from the IRS efile site as to why it failed. I tried multiple times using the fixes the application suggested. That is the real problem. Maybe you would like to comment on that!

Unable to Transmit Return

@RookieTaxFiler We cannot see that kind of information in the user forum.  We have no access to information specific to your return or your account.  Hopefully you will not have a problem this time.  But don't wait until the last minute on July 15 to try to e-file.  Just in case you have an issue, you will want to be able to mail it timely.  If you are getting a refund, it is okay to miss the filing deadline, but if you owe tax due, you need to file on time or you will be subject to penalties and interest.

Unable to Transmit Return

Absolutely none of the proposed solutions works to be successfull in e-filing : deleting the phone number on the Intuit account, rebooting by getting out and in the software (web), making phone numbers match (Intuit account and return form).

Frankly, the problem is so old for many users, and not yet fixed by the company...this is the last time I'll be using this software

Bye Bye!

There are several different issues lumped into this cluttered thread.    If you are referring to the 601ERRV:5 Invalid SMS Number error, the phone numbers must be valid USA numbers.    For some people no number is needed in the Intuit Account.   If changes are made in the Intuit Account, you have to log out, close and open the browser to reset things.  I have a detailed answer on this particular error higher up in this thread.

A number of foreign filers have successfully solved this 601ERRV:5 situation in this other thread.  If you wish, see what all they have done.  Post over in that thread and someone may be able to help you efile.

Unable to Transmit Return

Change your phone number to a US number in the Intuit Account of Turbo Tax.  No need to verify this number in the Intuit Account just click exit when your are done. Then go back to you return an continue filing.

Solution: Intuit Account -> Sign In & Security -> Phone (change & save no need to verify) -> back to e-file and retry.

Unable to Transmit Return

If your getting this message....

Your transmission didn't go through We could not e-file your return for the following reason: The Intuit Electronic Filing System is having difficulty recognizing the data in the return you are sending. To ensure you have the latest version of TurboTax, wait 24 hours to update your program automatically. If you still can't transmit your return, go to www.support.turbotax.com for a solution or workaround. In some cases, you may need to file your return by mail. - 601ERRV:5, CustHdr_17 - ?:? - Invalid SMS Number. Must be between 10 and 10 digits.

You have to make sure the the phone number listed on your return matches the one here as well... https://accounts-tax.intuit.com/  AND IT MUST BE A CELL PHONE! That is the key, a landline will not work.

Tried 100 different things and the return would never go, after I changed this it went through first try.

Has your Federal business return been accepted?  Since you already filed the Federal (by efile I assume), it will need to be accepted before efiling the state return by itself.

The following FAQ is from last Fall, but it hasn't been removed, so it's likely still in effect for 2020 product.

See if the FAQ about an update-efile loop is helpful..  It can occur in 2 situations--either when downloading/installing the state software initially, or at the end when efiling a state return and getting a prompt to update and being told "You're up to date."   The solution in that FAQ is a cleanup tool that removes your state program, prompts to update, then re-downloads the state program.

ADDENDUM 2/17/20 8:15 PM Pacific

User "oli" reports that tool in the FAQ is still only for 2019 TurboTax.  So don't use it for 2020 TurboTax.  If you have a 2019 TurboTax program installed, it would probably remove the 2019 state program.   I've contacted TurboTax to ask them to update that FAQ and clarify info on the cleanup utility in regards to specific tax years.

That cleanup tool only cleans up 2019 tax installation.  I completely uninstalled by 2020 Turbo Tax Business and still have the same problem.  I have been on the phone with Turbo Tax support for the last 3 hours and they don't know how to resolve the issue.

I revised my original comment to you above that mentioned that FAQ with a cleanup utility to warn other users who will likely see this thread.  Thanks for reporting back that it still only applies to 2019.  It would thus likely remove and redownload someone's 2019 state program from their 2019 product.  I've asked TurboTax if there is an update to the FAQ and tool for 2020. Hopefully, the FAQ will be updated.  Although if you completely reinstalled the program, the cleanup utility likely wouldn't have helped anyway.
