We filed our Federal & State tax returns by mail on Feb. 26, 2020. I have a receipt showing that I mailed a first class envelope to KC, MO. We received our state return many weeks ago. When I check on the IRS.gov website for our return using all the correct information, they have no record of my return. I am wondering if I should go back into Turbo Tax and file my federal tax return electronically? I cannot reach anyone by phone since there is no one in the offices and no one to ask. Please advise. l Thank you.

The IRS is not processing any paper tax return. So do not send another federal tax return to the IRS. It will probably be another few months before the IRS gets caught up. Just check the status of your federal tax refund on a weekly basis to see if it has been accepted and processing.

Paper Tax Returns: All taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider or IRS Free File if possible. The IRS is not currently able to process individual paper tax returns. If you already have filed via paper but it has not yet been processed, do not file a second tax return or write to the IRS to inquire about the status of your return or your economic impact payment. Paper returns will be processed once processing centers are able to reopen.

Thank you for your prompt reply. You helped put my mind at ease. I was truly not knowing where my return was or what to do. I really appreciate your help.
I did a paper filling on March 16th and still haven't received a refund. My records also can't be found when using the 'Where's my refund tool'. Anybody else in the same boat? Thanks!

We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.
Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
I have used TurboTax Premier for years & filed electronically. When I tried to file 2019 electronically , it was rejected because it said I had the incorrect AGI. I was forced to print the return, which they received on May 4, 2020. I owed $8.00 and they cashed my bank money order on May 6, 2020. Much later after I filed I received a paper transcript from the IRS with the same AGI I had input trying to file electronically. I have checked on irs.gov as recently as 1/22/2021 and they say I have not filed. I understand that they are behind. However, my question is: if they have not processed my 2019 return, how will I be able to file the 2020 return electronically? My 2019 return was joint with my husband who passed away in 2019. The 2020 return will be my first time filing as single. Will this confuse the already confused IRS even more?

Since the IRS has not processed the 2019 federal tax return, your 2019 AGI will not be in the IRS systems.
For the 2019 AGI enter a 0 (zero) and e-file. If for some reason it is rejected for the AGI entered then your only option is to print and mail the 2020 tax return.
When you file 2020 if the AGI rejects then enter 0 for the AGI. They might not have the 2019 AGI in the right database yet to verify you. When 2019 Rejected did you try entering 0 then too?
Do you use Turbo Tax Online version or the Desktop program?
If you used Turbo Tax last year you should start a brand new account for yourself and not transfer from last year. You can not remove a spouse or switch the order of names.
Online is only good for 1 return. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts. How to start another return in the Online version
Thanks for your prompt reply. I use the Desktop program.
For Desktop start a new return just for you but do not transfer from last year. Don't enter anything about him on it.
Perhaps because it is Sunday, but I am having no luck signing in, or getting a copy of my 2020 filing.
I guess I will try again tomorrow, but I have to send this laptop off for repair (damaged screen). Could someone please call me at [phone number removed] if I don't get signed in by 10 am Central time? I need a copy of my papers for last year. Thank you, Mary Wheeler
