After you file

I have used TurboTax Premier for years & filed electronically.  When I tried to file 2019 electronically , it was rejected because it said I had the incorrect AGI.   I was forced to print the return, which they received on May 4, 2020.  I owed $8.00 and they cashed my bank money order on May 6, 2020.  Much later after I filed I received a paper transcript from the IRS with the same AGI I had input trying to file electronically.  I have checked on irs.gov as recently as 1/22/2021 and they say I have not filed.  I understand that they are behind.  However, my question is:  if they have not processed my 2019 return, how will I be able to file the 2020 return electronically?  My 2019 return was joint with my husband who passed away in 2019.  The 2020 return will be my first time filing as single.  Will this confuse the already confused IRS even more?

Since the IRS has not processed the 2019 federal tax return, your 2019 AGI will not be in the IRS systems.

For the 2019 AGI enter a 0 (zero) and e-file.  If for some reason it is rejected for the AGI entered then your only option is to print and mail the 2020 tax return.
