My taxes were filed and accepted may 14th and yet today I've not received my return any idea why?

Millions of people are waiting for the severely backlogged IRS to process their tax returns and send their refunds.   You are not the only one.

The IRS is backlogged —-they are still trying to process millions of 2019 returns; they received millions of e-files on the day they opened for 2020 returns, and now they are burdened with sending out another round of stimulus checks.   Congress changed the tax laws in the middle of the tax season so millions of returns need to be recalculated; and now on top of all that,  they have to gear up to start making monthly child tax credit payments.

Some delays are resulting from incorrect amounts that folks entered for stimulus checks they received.   Many people have been confused by the recovery rebate credit and completed it incorrectly.  The IRS may delay your refund while they cross-check to see what you received.  Some refunds are delayed because of the tax law changes that went into effect recently.   If your return has unemployment or the premium tax credit on it, that may be delaying it.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 34of your 2020 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

As of June 23, 2021, we had 17.5 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include tax year 2020 returns such as those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.

How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We have processed all error free returns received prior to 2021, and continue to work the returns that need to be manually reviewed due to errors.  We are rerouting tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened and processed in the order received. As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.

What you should do: If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s my refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. We’re working hard to get through the backlog. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

@ChoiZayra00 Where does it say "rejected?"    Does your TurboTax account say that your 2020 return was rejected?

What does it say here when you use the e-file lookup tool?

@19631963Jr1b Did you read the information in this thread?   The IRS is severely backlogged, so millions of refunds are delayed.   Please return to the thread and scroll up to read.

The IRS is seriously behind in processing 2020 tax returns.  This is due to many factors, such as the pandemic, completing processing of millions of 2019 tax returns, stimulus payments, unemployment compensation exclusion tax refunds., changes in the tax code by Congress in the middle of the 2020 tax season and the like.

Millions of taxpayers have not yet received there federal tax refunds.

Go to this IRS website for operational status - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue

The IRS is opening mail within normal timeframes and all paper and electronic individual returns received prior to April 2021 have been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review.  As of August 20, 2021, we had 10.1 million unprocessed individual returns. Unprocessed individual returns include tax year 2020 returns such as those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund and in some cases this work could take 90 to 120 days.

What you should do: In most instances, no further action is needed but you may check Where’s my refund or you can view your account. Our return was accepted April 29, 2021. We took the standard deduction and are retired. They owe us over 3 grand and we had made estimated payments in 2019 before Covid and we did not work outside jobs as expected. We did not get any stimulus checks, but were eligible for them. We are pissed as still no refund and it is August 28, 2021!!

@wagonerc71 The delay is likely because you have the recovery rebate credit if you did not receive the stimulus checks that were sent out in 2020 or early 2021.  Any tax return with an amount on line 30 must be looked at by a human.  Sorry.   If you scroll up in this thread you will see that there are many others in the same situation.

My taxes were filed and accepted may 14th and yet today I've not received my return any idea why?

I have the same situation, filed a few days later, return was accepted.I have nothing outstanding, and have ONLY received the first STIMULUS of $600.Still No #2 OR #3,which makes no sense either. My info has not changed,my taxes get filed every year. Before I filed 2020 taxes,I had called IRS,which wasn't the biggest help either,it was only general info.I was told I should file just in case their was missing info needed.

Since it seems to be that this company is and as it should be,well aware that IRS is EXTREMELY "BACKLOGGED" for whatever excuses they come up with, I can't understand why is it that this is the first year out of all 6 prior years of using Turbo tax, that I am being told I HAVE NO CHOICE NOW AT THIS POINT,THAT I HAVE TO PAY THE TAX PREPERATION FEE MYSELF,INSTEAD OF IT COMING FROM MY RETURN LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO.

THE MOST RECENT EMAIL I RECIEVED, SAYS THAT MY REFUND AT THIS POINT WAS EITHER REDUCED OR NOT ISSUED AT ALL(which I know is NOT true,IRS still says Processing).I find it very unfair to use this situation to try to make people pay for something,at a time they either can't afford to or weren't expecting to have to pay for the reason of,just because TURBOTAX decides.

I WOULD HAVE NEVER GIVEN MY ACCOUNT INFO. IF I WOULD HAVE KNOWN I WAS GOING TO BE TOLD UNFAIRLY,THAT I HAVE NO CHOICE I HAVE TO PAY THE TAX PREP. FEE ON THE DATE THEY ARE TELLING ME IT'S COMING OUT OF MY ACCOUNT.

THIS IS NOT HOW I UNDERSTOOD THIS WAS THE REASON FOR THE ACCOUNT NUMBER GIVEN.IT WAS ONLY SUPPOSED TO BE IF A REFUND WAS NOT ISSUED, I didn't see anywhere that said,at anytime we may take our payment whenever we feel like getting paid, even though IRS is backup and Basically Nobody has received a return yet. But,we're just assuming your not getting yours, and sending you this email to make you worry so u have to pay us now.

VERY UNFAIR,DEFINITELY NOT HOW IT WAS EXPLAINED IN THE AGREEMENT.

@heatherlessman

Did you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund?  Is your refund taking an unusually long time to arrive?  Or was your refund seized to pay a debt you owed? if so, you signed an agreement that says TT can withdraw its fees from your account.  TurboTax would have sent several emails to you before they took the money out of your account.

I filed my taxes in February 2021 and I still haven't received my return and yet the government is quick to take my money to pay back state. Now when I check the "Where's my refund?" it's telling me, "We cannot provide any information about your refund." What the heck is happening? I have tried to be patient but this is getting ridiculous. The worst part is you cant call and get anyone on the phone and there is no way to find out what is going on.

I have got a letting in the mail telling me to call after 60 days if I still havent got my refund and that was 120 days ago. I still cant get anyone on the phone. Where the heck is my freaking return?
