Thank you, @CarissaM, for the additional information. I'm going to share the FAQ that states a user "may" be able to electronically file a 1040X. It would be shocking to get to the end of preparing the 1040X and then learn that it must be printed and mailed.
Can I e-file my amended return?
I did realize that it said "may" be able to e-file. I took this to mean that you had to meet the requirements set forth by the IRS in order to be able to e-file a 1040X. I think the better thing would be to not include any verbiage about e-filing a 1040X if TurboTax doesn't offer that ability for the year that is being amended.
@CarissaM can we e-file an amended 2022 return two years from now? In other words, will TurboTax allow e-filing amended returns every year going forward?
That would need to be evaluated at the time, based on current information. We cannot predict what the future process or status would be. I would advise checking back when you are ready to file the amend in 2 years if this is the case. @jimretz1
What I'm really asking is, will Intuit allow filing 1040X (and amended state) returns with TurboTax in the future? The IRS encourages it. There's no reason Intuit and TurboTax can't do it. So why not turn that on that feature? It's a pretty simple question.
We don't have information on future updates at this moment in time, however, if your original return was successfully e-filed using TurboTax, your 2022, 2021, or 2020 federal Form 1040-X amended return may be eligible for electronic filing.
Can I e-file my federal Form 1040-X amended return?
2020 1040X is most definitely NOT able to be e-filed. And what is very frustrating is that you are the second TurboTax employee I've interacted with who does not know this. In fact the first customer person I spoke with on the phone was sure that I could. She was absolutely wrong! It was incredibly frustrating. Intuit/TurboTax needs to conduct better employee training.
Had to sign up because these people are giving people incorrect information that contradicts what is available on the TurboTax site. Please take a look at the information on the following two pages.

Beginning with the 2019 tax year, the IRS allows you to e-file amended tax returns if you filed the original return electronically and provided that your tax software supplier supports electronically filing amended returns. To amend a return for 2018 or earlier, you'll need to print the completed Form 1040-X and any other forms you're amending. Attach any necessary supporting documentation, such as:
Mail all the forms and documents to the address provided in the instructions or electronically file the return if you are able to.
Yes. TurboTax walks you step-by-step through amending your federal income tax return.
Yes, the IRS began accepting e-filed amended returns for 2019 and later tax years. However, for an amended return to be electronically filed, your originally filed tax return has to have been electronically filed as well.
The IRS system typically allows you to e-file amended returns for the current tax year and the two prior tax years. Amended returns for year prior to this time period cannot be e-filed. You will need to file these amended returns for older year by printing and sending them in by mail.
Not all tax software providers support electronically filing amended returns for other than the current year. If not then you will need to file your amended on paper and mail it to the IRS.

Your 2022, 2021, or 2020 federal Form 1040-X amended return may be eligible for electronic filing if the original return was successfully e-filed using TurboTax. However, there is a chance your return cannot be electronically filed. If this happens, you'll need to print and mail your tax return.
If amending for a year prior to 2020, you need to print and mail your amended return. Follow these instructions to amend a prior-year return.
Note: For amendments prior to tax year 2020, you must mail a paper return. While the Internal Revenue Service and your state may accept e-filed amended returns, TurboTax may still have you mail a paper return. This includes amended California returns.
Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.
I don’t get it. I just went through TT process to amend my 2022 tax return, only to be told at the end that I have to print it and mail it in. I could’ve sworn I saw something indicating I could e-file it. Is there something about the transition into the new year — i.e. January 2024 that disables the e-file capability for a window of time? In other words, if I wait a bit can I e-file the amended return and skip the print and mail bad solution?
Yes, you can Efile your 2022 Amended Return.
Since you have up to three years to file an Amended Return, you can wait a bit to Efile your Amendment.
There may possibly be a reason you would not be able to Efile an Amended 2022 return, but not because the Efile window has closed. Actually, Efile officially opens on 1/29/2024 this year, so you could try again after that date.
If you were able to Efile your original return, and then added a particular form to your Amended Return, you may not be able to Efile your amendment. Since we can't see your return in this forum, we wouldn't know that (unless your 'Unable to Efile' message has some details).
Here's more info on Can I Efile My Amended Return?
What is 'current' year? I am trying to file 2022 1040x and TurboTax error out on it. e-file season for 2022 is over message. I used TT in 2022. Now I have to print 60 pages!
The current year is now 2023. The IRS won't open efiling until 1/29/24 for 2023 returns. And we are not sure if you will be able to efile prior year amended returns. Just wait until after 1/29 and see if you can.
TT gives the wrong information here and than error out when I tried it using desktop for 2022 1040x. go figure.
So what you are saying is that there is a limited time window, in addition to the limit on how far back you can go with e-file. That was not clear from all the TT replies I saw. I wished I knew sooner, I just killed a tree.
Thx in any case.
