I overstated my SS income do I need to amend my tax tax return?

If you filed, it is like dropping it into a mailbox - you cannot get it back.

You'll have wait until your return is either accepted or rejected.

  • If rejected, you can make any necessary changes.
  • If accepted, you'll need to amend your return
  • To avoid unnecessary delays, do not amend until your original return has been fully processed.  You will need to print and mail the amendment.
  • Allow 8-12 weeks for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

You can check the status of your amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up.

I overstated my SS income do I need to amend my tax tax return?

I overstated my SS income by $61. There is no withholding. Will this affect my refund?

Overstating social security by $61 would have zero or minimal effect on your refund depending on how much was taxed and what tax bracket you are in. At worse, overstating income on your return would only cause you to have a higher tax liability meaning a lower refund than you should have gotten.  Worse case scenario, if your social security was taxed at the highest possible levels your refund could be about $15 more than what you filed.  If you wanted to recover that refund you would need to file an amendment once the IRS has processed your return.

NOTE:  Sometimes the IRS may catch the error and send you the correct refund.
