How do I amend 2 years' tax return? I filed 2018 tax myself and my family member filed mine as dependent in 2017. I have w2c for both years.

As described in title, I was a dependent in 2017 and I filed my tax myself in 2018. My employer (same both years) did not collect FICA taxes both years, so they collected all I owe and sent me w2c for both years. I have couple of questions on how to amend my tax return in this case.
1. I think 2018 tax return amendment should be normal, how do I amend it using turbotax? Also, I had 2 w2 for different employers in 2018. When I send the forms for amendment, should I only send w2 and w2c for the company that needs correction, or should I send all w2 that I used for 2018 tax filing?
2. For 2017 tax return, should my family member amend my tax return, or is it possible for me to do it myself? How would this be different from amending 2018 tax return?

It is not clear just what the W-2C changed.   If it does not change the amount of tax owed or refund then amending is not necessary.

Each tax year is separate and must be amended separately.   Amended returns can only be mailed.  NEVER mail more that one amended return in the same envelop of the IRS mail room will just attach them together and one will never get processed.

Amended returns can only be mailed. It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it.

See this TurboTax FAQ for detailed amend instructions:

You can check the status of the amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after mailing.

Hi,

Thanks for your response; As mentioned in the question, the changed amount is box 3, 4, 5 and 6, which is social security and medicare wages and withheld amounts. In this case, do I not need to amend tax filing?

Also I understand that the 2 years tax amendment should be filed separately. For 2017 tax, I did not file it myself as I was a dependent, and my family member filed it as part of her tax filing. In this case, should she file amend for that year or is it possible for me to do it myself?

What about 2017?  Even if you were a dependent you still file your own return for your income.  They can't enter your income on their return.  Sounds like you may need to file an original 2017 return if you made over 6,350.

Better check with her on how she reported your income.  If she put it on her return she definitely needs to amend to take it off. Maybe she filed a separate return for you.

If they only changed boxes 3-6 you don't need to amend unless you had more than 1 employer and the total of boxes 4 went over the Social Security max.  Or was reduced to be under the max.  The max for 2018 box 4 is $7,960.80.

Thanks for your response,

I think she filed mine separately, she sent me 1040EZ form from 2017.

Saw this comment after I replied - box 4 in w2c is lower than the max you told me. Looks like I won't have to amend for either year then (2017 w2c box 4 is even lower). Thank you for your help 🙂

I think you said you had more than 1 employer for 2018?  What do both box 4 add up to?  Is the total for both less than the max before and after the the change?

Never mind, checked again and for 2017 the changed parts are actually box 1 to 6 and 15 to 20, which probably means I need to amend....

I did have 2 employers for 2018, but total of box 4 is still less than max because I only made $600 from the other employer.

You do not amend for a W-2C that changes boxes 3-6 since that would be a do  nothing change (unless more than the maximum was withheld).   W-2 boxes 3-6 do not get reported on a tax return at all - it is information that the employer sends to the IRS and SSA and has no effect on your tax return.

(When you said "withholding" I originally thought that you meant box 2 tax withholding.)

Ah i see, then I wouldn't have to worry about 2018 tax then. Thanks a lot for your help - and sorry for so many questions, but i do have one more question. So I just learned that for my 2017 tax the box 1 to 6 and 15 to 20 has changed, does this mean that I would have to amend for 2017 tax year? This has changed state and local tax information as well, I'm wondering if I would have to make different amendments for federal, state and local tax amendment if I have to amend.
