I filed for both 2017 and 2018 Oct 10;
my state refunds are being mailed out this week which is great.
my 2018 federal shows accepted and processing on irs site, but nothing for 2017. They were both submitted electronically, apparently they could not be mailed in this year.
Are they processing federal one after the other?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
WHAT????? How could you efile them this year? I don't understand... "They were both submitted electronically, apparently they could not be mailed in this year."
Online and efiling was only for 2019 returns. Prior year returns have to be mailed. And mail each year in a separate envelope or they will only process one year. If you used the Turbo Tax online version then you actually efiled it as a 2019 return. And Online is only good for 1 return. So you may have a BIG problem. If your 2017 or 2018 return got efiled on the 2019 forms then to do a real 2019 return you will have to AMEND the one you already efiled and change it around to be for 2019.
If you still need to do 2017 and 2018...........
How to file a prior year
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/using-turbotax/help/how-do-i-prepare-a-prior-year-tax-return/00/25...
You can only buy the download for prior years. You have to buy a separate program for each year. They only sell the last 3 years. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install it on. Buy the download here

You have to print and mail prior year returns. When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS received the return. Don’t forget state.
Important! Mail Federal and State in separate envelopes and mail each year in separate envelopes.
If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline. You have 3 years to file for a refund. If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.
Or If you have a simple return You can fill out the blank forms for free.

Thanks for the info!
My tax preparer said that they had to be submitted electronically this year and not by mail. They’ve both been accepted by both the federal and state, with both state refunds being mailed out this week. My 2018 return shows in progress but 2017 is not showing.
No you must have misunderstood your tax preparer. You have to mail prior year returns, at least if you use Turbo Tax. And read my post again. You can not have used Turbo Tax to efile 2018 or 2017. If you used the Online version you really filed a *** 2019 *** return with your 2018 or 2017 info. And online is only good for 1 return. Did you use 2 different accounts? I think you have a BIG MESS.
To do prior year returns you have to buy the Desktop program for each year. You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install them on. Did you buy the programs here?

I did not use turbo tax for 2017/2018.
i used my tax advisor who prepared them and submitted them both.
i did use turbo tax for 2019 however since it was a more simple return.
They’ve been processed so all is good thanks for all the info!
