The IRS is seriously behind in processing 2020 tax returns. This is due to many factors, such as the pandemic, completing processing of millions of 2019 tax returns, stimulus payments, unemployment compensation exclusion tax refunds., changes in the tax code by Congress in the middle of the 2020 tax season and the like.
Millions of taxpayers have not yet received there federal tax refunds.
Go to this IRS website for operational status - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-operations-during-covid-19-mission-critical-functions-continue
The IRS is opening mail within normal timeframes and all paper and electronic individual returns received prior to April 2021 have been processed if the return had no errors or did not require further review. As of October 9, 2021, we had 7.1 million unprocessed individual returns. Unprocessed individual returns include tax year 2020 returns such as those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund and in some cases this work could take 90 to 120 days. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.
What you should do: In most instances, no further action is needed but you may check Where’s my refund or you can view your account. If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s my refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. We’re working hard to get through the backlog. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

Well your doing better than me. I received my State Refund, but haven’t received my Federal Tax Refund from last year, and it’s a whole new year. I just filed my Taxes for 2021, and haven’t even got the year before that. If you owed them I betcha they’d be looking for you to pay them. Makes no sense, people need their money.
I’m with you, its a been a year, and I haven’t got my Federal Refund, but I got my State from last year. This doesn’t make no sense, but I bet if you owed them they’d be on your *** looking for their money.
I spent 2 hours on hold today with IRS advocate april fool on me( 04/01/22) to find out mailed in return are very slow due to covid-19 IRS was closed for months . Asked if I should mail in a 2nd one they said no don't or they'll think I'm trying to get 2 refunds and cause a new problem. Sorry can't help told to wait 16 more weeks to call again.
Since Turbo Tax will not know the status of anyone's return, please contact the IRS.
How do I contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)?
https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/irs/help/how-do-i-contact-the-internal-revenue-service-irs/00/2594...
@Slmoran538
This is ridiculous I AM COMPLETELY ON ABLE TO CONTACT THE IRS REGARDING MY REFUND THERES NO OPTION THAT LETS YOU SPEAK WITH A REPRESENTATIVE THEY ARE COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL AND DONNOT CARE ABOUT THE LIVELY HOOD OF THIER TAX PAYING CITIZENS
@Mstewart107 The IRS is severely backlogged and understaffed. They do not answer many phone calls. If you mailed your tax return you should expect it to take at least six months to be processed.
Or did you e-file?
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:
To track your state refund:

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901548-why-do-some-refunds-take-longer-than-others
If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

And I e filed March 18th waited and they sent me letter saying I had to verify my identity in order for my refund to be processed dId that on April 12th, letter said up to 9 weeks… It’s the. Middle of June and my return still isn’t even processed yet I want to repot this!!
E filled and verified
@Mstewart107 The very backlogged IRS is taking longer than normal for many things, which sadly includes processing returns for folks who verified their identity. Sorry......it is frustrating, but only the IRS is in control. TurboTax cannot speed them up for you. Keep checking the IRS refund site for information.
As of June 1, 2022, we had 10.5 million unprocessed individual returns which include returns received before 2022, and new tax year 2021 returns. Of these, 2 million returns require error correction or other special handling, and 8.5 million are paper returns waiting to be reviewed and processed. This work does not typically require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund and in some cases this work could take 90 to 120 days. If a correction is made to any Recovery Rebate Credit, Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.
