The IRS issues refunds, not TurboTax. Unfortunately, this means that we can't say for sure why you haven’t received your refund yet. You can call the IRS at 800-829-1040.
A lot of taxpayers are in the same situation as you due to the IRS backlog right now. Although The IRS issues most refunds from e-filed returns in about 21 days, some returns take more time to review. In addition, the IRS is processing millions of returns, as well as stimulus checks, and they are doing everything they can to be as prompt as possible.
For some taxpayers, PATH Act requirements and other identity-protection safeguards implemented by the IRS may account for longer wait times.
Other things that can delay your refund include, but are not limited to:
I filed 2/22. Got my State Refund within a week or two. 5/20 now and still waiting. Received, processing. RIDICULOUS
Mel
The IRS remains seriously backlogged due to all the new tax laws and extra stimulus filings, as well as unprocessed 2019 returns still left over from the COVID shutdown. Lots of other folks are still waiting (some since mid-February), so please continue to be patient. Also see:
Tax refund delays could continue as backlog of tax returns is growing, tax advocate says - CBS News
iS anyone else waiting this long? Filed electronically and received on 2/22. 3 months later and still "processing."
Mel
OK, I've been venting here. filed/received on 2/22 and processing ever since.
I checked Friday and it was still processing. Got bored so checked Monday. No longer processing. Amazed that something happened over the Holiday weekend. But here's the rub.
I checked further and the hold-up was the Economic Impact Payment Credit.
So, let's say my 1st pmt was $200 and 2nd pmt was $700.
Their correction: 1st pmt $200 and 2nd pmt $200 resulting in an increased refund. They stalled me for 3 1/2 months and they don't know it but they screwed up. My refund is scheduled for next week.
So, I THINK: TT and I did it correctly and the IRS after this long delay PROBABLY botched it up (unless I am misreading the transcript).
Do I even try to correct them and create probably another long delay?
Thoughts?
Mel
It has been nearly three months since the my federal tax 1040SR was filed . . . way beyond the anticipated 21 days and hopefully expedited by refunding via direct deposit. Totally unacceptable. Is there a problem that I have not been made aware of?
I checked the status and it states being processed. Do I get interest on my money for this delay?
I had already checked the IRS site before contacting turbotax.
This process is not helpful!! So disappointed there is not resolution insight.
@sheepdog home You are among MILLIONS of people who are experiencing delays in receiving your federal refund. The IRS is very severely backlogged so many refunds are late. And....yes....they will pay some interest for late refunds.
Many refunds are taking longer during the pandemic. The IRS is backlogged —-they are still trying to process millions of 2019 returns; they received millions of e-filed on the day they opened for 2020 returns, and now they are burdened with sending out another round of stimulus checks. Congress changed the tax laws in the middle of the tax season so millions of returns need to be recalculated; and now on top of all that, they have to gear up to start making monthly child tax credit payments.
Some delays are resulting from incorrect amounts that folks entered for stimulus checks they received. Many people have been confused by the recovery rebate credit and completed it incorrectly. The IRS may delay your refund while they cross-check to see what you received. Some refunds are delayed because of the tax law changes that went into effect recently. If your return has unemployment or the premium tax credit on it, that may be delaying it.

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

As of June 23, 2021, we had 17.5 million unprocessed individual returns in the pipeline. Unprocessed returns include tax year 2020 returns such as those requiring correction to the Recovery Rebate Credit amount or validation of 2019 income used to figure the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). This work does not require us to correspond with taxpayers but does require special handling by an IRS employee so, in these instances, it is taking the IRS more than 21 days to issue any related refund. If, as a result, a correction is made to any RRC, EITC or ACTC claimed on the return, the IRS will send taxpayers an explanation. Taxpayers are encouraged to continue to check Where’s My Refund? for their personalized refund status and can review Tax Season Refund Frequently Asked Questions.
How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We have processed all error free returns received prior to 2021, and continue to work the returns that need to be manually reviewed due to errors. We are rerouting tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened and processed in the order received. As the return is processed, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues depends on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.
What you should do: If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s my refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. We’re working hard to get through the backlog. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
Why haven't I gotten my federal tax return but I have received my state tax. It's been well over 21 days
@BabyGabby5 21 days is not a promise or guarantee.
Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals.
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

I received my state but not federal

Federal and state tax refunds are sent separately from separate tax authorities and at different days/times.
If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions
I filed April 30th, 2021. The status for state and federal said 'Accepted' (and still does). I finally received my State return in September on a TurboCard and was never informed of it, leading to paying monthly fees on money I didn't know I had. This is the minimal concern.
The major concern is that I never received my Federal return or the final two stimulus payments. I've attempted multiple times to call the IRS over the past 10 months, just to be placed on hold for 10 minutes leading to an automated message saying that the call volume is too high and to try back again. This is a major concern as there is no email address to contact. How exactly do you think that I should proceed? I don't want to file a lawsuit if I don't have to, but without getting the payment and no way to contact, it may be my only option.
