The IRS knows that you made the extension payment so will apply that to the tax payments on your federal tax return. You do not need to amend your 2022 tax return.
Thanks! Still have a question... as of right now, we just gave the IRS an extra $500. Will that get refunded back?
- Example (not actual numbers), we owed $1500 for 2022.
- Filed an extension April 2023 using freefile and paid $500, so should only owe $1000 now.
- IRS accepted the $500 in April 2023.
- Filed taxes Oct 2023 and had to pay $1500 through TurboTax, because TT did not see the $500 payment.
- In total, we paid $2000 instead of the correct $1500.
Hope that makes more sense.
In your example, yes, you will get a refund of $500. Most likely, as DoninGA said, the IRS will recognize the overpayment and send you a refund without your having to do anything. It will probably take several months for that to happen. Just wait and see if you get the refund. Do not amend your tax return. If you don't get the refund after a few months, you can call the IRS and check on the status.
If your taxes owed on the federal tax return was $1,500 and you paid that amount with the return but you also paid $500 in April 2023, then the IRS will refund you the $500 extra that you paid.
However, if you are not in a federally declared disaster area, you were required to pay your total taxes owed on or before April 17,2023. So the IRS will be sending a bill in the mail for penalties and interest on the amount of taxes owed and not paid on time.
IRS will take penalties and interest out of your extra $500.
You will get back less than $500.
There will not necessarily be penalties or interest. The payment with the filing of the tax return will be considered timely if at least 90% of the tax liability determined on the tax return was paid by April 15.
