Be sure you said the new baby lived with you the WHOLE YEAR! Go back and check that.
If you had a child born in 2021- Add them under My Info. You need to answer 2 questions…..
Did your child live with you for the whole year? Answer YES even if they were born late in the year (even on Dec 31).
Then was at least half of child's expenses paid by CHILD? Usually is NO.
Check 1040 lines 19 and 28 and schedule 8812 for the Child Tax Credit. It may have been added before you noticed or got to that section.
Line 19 is blank, but 28 has an amount in it (I have 5 kids total including the newborn). I was under the impression I'd get at least $3,600 for her. Will the additional child tax credits be included in the federal refund or are they distributed separately?
The refund is included on line 28 of your 1040. It is not a separately issued payment. If you had a newborn, did you select that the child lived with you for all 12 months? If you didn't you will need to go back and change it to get the credit. A child born in 2021 is counted as having lived with you for the entire year.
Yes, I did mark that she lived with me the entire year and I covered their expenses.
Ok ... how much is on line 28?
And how many kids did you claim on the 2020 return ?
On the 2021 return ? And how many were UNDER the age of 6?
And look at line 30 ... how much is on that line?
Line 28 - 9,900
Claimed 4 on 2020 return
Claiming 5 on 2021 return
Line 40 is 1,400
On the 2021 return 2 were under age 6
