I enter wrong bank information

Whether you're able to change bank information depends on if you have already filed or not.

If you have NOT already file:

To review and correct previously-entered bank account info, simply revisit the File section in TurboTax and step through the screens.

If you have already filed:

If the bank information you provided is for a closed or invalid account, the government will mail you a refund checkOnce your return has been accepted (or mailed), it's too late to change your bank account for direct deposit.

If the info you entered is someone else's account, don't worry – some banks won't deposit tax refunds into accounts where names don't match up.  The best way for you to track your federal refund is to call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

If your recently-filed return is in pending status, wait until it's either accepted or rejected.

  • If rejected, you can update your account and any issues that caused the rejection.   Open your return in TurboTax and go through the File section again to update your bank account before re-submitting your return.
  • If accepted, you'll get your refund check in the mail.

TurboTax FAQ: What if I entered the wrong bank account for direct deposit?

I enter wrong bank information

I owed taxes, but had typo in the bank information I provided.  didn't realize until a week later, because I noticed that the money was not taken from my checking account.  I finally got a letter today from IRS informing me of this, and instructing me to pay as soon as possible! the letter came with a pay stub in case I was going to send a check, however the fastest way was to go to www.irs.gov/directpay, enter my info for the tax year, and enter the correct bank information. payment went through immediately, and I have a confirmation receipt.  you can also pay by credit card (though there is a fee) that address is: www.irs.gov/payments.
I hope this helps!!

I enter wrong bank information

Turbotax would not let me enter bank info. because I was not expecting a refund. Now, with stimulus checks coming, no one has my bank info. Thanks a lot. Get My Payment app is worthless so I tried getting back to Turbotax to no avail. Why do IRS and companies like Turbotax make it so difficult to enter simple information? Also, why doesn't the VA come out and say they have my bank info. and will let IRS send the money like Social Security has done?

You cannot  change banking information while your return is in pending, nor can you change it after the return is accepted.  The IRS does not allow it.

If you e-filed:

Banking information for direct deposit is wrong

If you entered incorrect banking information for your refund, you can change it if your return is rejected.  If it is accepted, however, it is too late to change it.  The bank will reject the refund and send it back to the IRS.  Then the IRS will issue a paper check and mail it to the address you put on your tax return.  Expect a delay of at least a couple of weeks to receive your refund.
