@yinshi22 What does not make sense? If you received the $1400 already last year and then on your tax return said no you did not receive it, you put it on line 30 of your Form 1040 again--like you were trying to get it again. You cannot get the $1400 twice --- so when the IRS sees that you received it already, it is removed from the amount of your refund.
I wasn't trying to deceive them. It's the wording that leads to misunderstanding. How are stimulus and Recovery Rebate Credit the same? The credit you pay back and stimulus is tax-free. So if they had it on record that I received $1,400, why would they add it to line 30 and deduct it? Isn't that their job to correct it, not penalize you as if you received it twice. It appears that I'm not the only one who has made this mistake. I just entered basic that what was on my W-2. Turbo tax did the rest.
The stimulus checks were paid in advance for a credit that you can receive on your 2021 tax return. Stimulus and EIP, and recovery rebate credit all refer to the same money. You cannot get the $1400 twice. Sorry. If you misunderstood the questions and put it on your tax return again, you were trying to get the credit for money you already received. Please check your online IRS account to see when the IRS says you got your $1400.

Did you ever get this resolved? I filed in Feb of this year and also clicked did not receive 3rd stimulus although later I realized I did (oops) 6 months later I still have not gotten my refund even though this other person in the thread said to just wait. I still cannot get in contact with the IRS.
Should we still be waiting 6 months after filing? I still am waiting for my refund
@NoRefundBigSad Lots of people are still waiting for federal refunds, especially if they filed by mail. There is a backlog of nearly 9 million unprocessed federal tax returns. Returns are taking six to nine months (or more) to be processed.
First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control. TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.
You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

OR——if you filed by mail, expect a long wait. It is taking the very backlogged IRS six to nine months to process mailed returns. Until a human opens your envelope and enters the data into the system, nothing will even show up on the refund site, so you will have to be very patient.
I still have the same message which is Our changes decreased the amount of your refund to $0.00. A notice that explains the changes to your tax return was mailed on March 7, 2022 I was owed a 1397 refund but the stimulus was 1400, I got a notice saying I owed 3 dollars which is the difference between the two numbers. I guess I'll just wait longer or try to make an appointment at the local IRS office. I'm assuming I should still get this money correct?
If your refund is short $1,400 then that is because you said you did not receive the 3rd stimulus payment and the IRS has records that show you were sent the 3rd stimulus payment so they removed the $1,400 Recovery Rebate Credit that was entered on Form 1040 Line 30.
Go to this IRS website for your tax account to see if the 3rd stimulus payment is entered - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account
If you checked your bank account in the March - May 2021 timeframe and there is not a $1,400 EIP3 payment from the IRS then go to this IRS website for how to start a trace on the payment - https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/questions-and-answers-about-the-third-economic-impact-payment-topic-j-p...
Yeah I definitely got it, I checked later when I had gotten my state refund but not federal and then realized that I had done. So now I guess I wait in queue for it to be resolved? Or will it be? I definitely am entitled to my refund of 1397 but I feel like since I said no i didnt get my 3rd stim check that they are thinking they owe me the 1400 but are taking it out of my refund and in turn I owe 3 dollars but I have not gotten any of either. It doesn't help that they have the phones turned off at the IRS after this long and still cannot get ahold of anyone
@NoRefundBigSad Look at your Form 1040. If you have $1400 on line 30, and your refund as shown on line 35a is $1397-----you are not getting a refund. You cannot get that $1400 twice----and if you put $1400 on line 30, you tried (accidentally) to get the $1400 again. You may eventually hear from the IRS asking you to pay $3.
Yes I understand I cannot get the stimulus twice but I should get my refund. I have a simple return and nothing has changed and I got a refund last year. I should still get the 1397 that I was entitled to before the whole double 3rd stimulus thing. I'm not understanding why accidentally pressing that button negates my refund
Sorry but your refund was only for the Recovery Rebate Credit (3rd Stimulus payment). If you had answered right and said you already got the 1400 then you would not have a refund but a $3 tax due. You have no refund. The IRS is right and there is nothing you can do or fix.
Ignoring the 1400 on line 30 you need to compare 2021 to 2020 all lines and see what changed. Did you make less in 2021 and have less withholding taken out? Are you missing a dependent on your 2021 return?
Ok so the 3rd stimulus check was basically an advance on my refund for the next year then? Absolutely nothing has changed between filings other than making a dollar an hour more. Zero kids, no marriage, no house, no anything. That's why I'm so confused as to why I get no refund because I got the 3rd stimulus check. Last year I got back the normal amount I've gotten each year which was roughly 1200ish so I just can't wrap my head around this whole situation unless the 3rd stimulus was going to be taken out of 2021s taxes
Basically right. Print your 2021 return. Cross out the 1400 on line 30 and recalculate the lines (from 16 to the bottom) by hand. If you made more income the tax is more and it sounds like the tax withholding didn't keep up with the increase in income. Actually you came out good, you only owe $3. You should always try to come out even. You don't want to owe and you don't want to let the IRS hold your money all year. A refund is just a return of your own money. You got more in your paychecks each month.
Oh I missed your last sentence. No you are not paying it back. It is being taken out because it should not have been on your return at all. You already got it. You tried to get it again.
