How can I get my original 20/20 tax return after I accidentally amended it on here and it was not accepted because apparently I wasn't supposed to?

They didn't accept my amended return because they never received an original. I thought they asked me to do an amended whenever they said my son's Social Security was wrong. I just figured I'd needed to amend it so I did and now they just need the original and I don't know how to get it off of turbotax now that it says amended.

You have to save a copy of the tax return before you amend it.   Once you start an amend the original is gone.

All you can do now is go into the amend and change anything that you amended so it is the same as before you amended it.  Cancel the amend, make sure that your son's social security number is correct and then try to file again.  You might end up having to print and mail the return if it will not efile.

You should not have clicked on anything that said amend.   If your e-file was rejected, then the return was not ever filed in the first place.  Amending is a special process you only use to correct mistakes or add information to a return that was filed and fully processed by the IRS.   Unfortunately, you can no longer use the online software to do anything to that return.   And a 2020 return cannot be e-filed.  It can only be filed by mail.

You might just need to start all over using the CD/download for 2020, prepare the return, and then print it, sign it and mail it in.   

*Maybe* you can fix it by clicking on I amended by mistake.....but do not count on it.

Online tax preparation and e-filing for 2021returns is now permanently closed.

Now it is too late to use online software or to e-file. If you have any changes/corrections at all to make to your 2020 return, you now have to complete it using desktop software, which you must download to a full PC or Mac  (not to a mobile device).Then you need to print, sign and mail it.

If you are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing late.  If you owe tax due, then file and pay the amount due as shown on the Form 1040, but expect a bill later from the IRS for the penalty and interest you will owe.  Only the IRS will calculate this—TurboTax will not calculate it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
