Not kelwithaneye but similar situation with my dad trying to take off my brother. He has already filed and been approved. Does my dad have to edit through the whole thing again or only the dependent portions (and education tax credit)? Thanks in advance!
See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.
I've been a tax preparer for several years now and find TurboTax to be a bit complex when it comes to submitting amendments, however, if you look just below the part which says "your tax returns & documents" (midway down the page) the current year should list options to "Amend (change) returns"....pick that option and then remove from your personal information your dependent. For any other questions or for a pro, like me, to help you out send me your questions via FB consultusperu is my business page. Best of luck to you!
Has anyone actually gotten their amended return processed or accepted by the IRS?
I mailed mine in on April 10th to change my incorrect status from dependent to independent, but their website still says "Your amended return information is currently unavailable in this application". I know they were closed for some time because of the pandemic, but at this point I don't think anyone will get their stimulus checks or subsequent aid until the next tax filing year, some even mailed theirs in on February and still nothing.
@cydb The IRS has not been working on mailed returns until very recently---and an amended return can only be filed by mailing it in. Under normal circumstances you would be able to see something about your mailed in Form 1040X after about three weeks, but that is not the case right now. The usual 4 months for processing an amended return is going to take longer. Sorry.

MAILED RETURNS
Per the IRS website IRS Operations During COVID-19: Mission-critical functions continue:
IRS operational status and alternatives
Processing Delays for Paper Tax Returns: Taxpayers should file electronically through their tax preparer, tax software provider, or IRS Free File.
We’re experiencing delays in processing paper tax returns due to limited staffing. If you already filed a paper return, we will process it in the order we received it.
Do not file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.
If you mail a tax return (or a payment) to the IRS, it is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it like UPS or certified mail so you will know it was received.
TurboTax will not know anything about your amended return, and nor will TT know that you put your 1040X in an envelope and took it to a mailbox. TurboTax does not get updates on mailed (or e-filed) returns.
When the IRS finally opens its mail and begins to process mailed returns you can check the status on the IRS site.

Ours recently changed to received and being processed but with a note that we should call them. We haven't called yet.
Just got off the phone with the IRS. What we got is a standard response regarding 16 weeks having passed for processing (as in a normal year). Our amended return is currently being processed.Because of current events, the 16 week window started on Aug. 1. If our amended return is accepted, we won't see a check this year but should be able to claim on our 2020 taxes and get it then. If a second relief bill is passed and our amended return has been accepted, it's possible that my son could receive the second check this year. Hope that helps.
Same situation here. We amended my daughters 2019 to reflect that she cannot be used as a dependent. The amended tax return was processed but she still has not received any stimulus payment and her amended 2019 was processed months ago. How do we find out when it will be received?
@kaycholewinski - it will all be reconciled on the 2020 tax return; she will not receive it via the 2019 amendment
Look at Line 30 of Form 1040 closely as your daughter prepares her 2020 tax return; I suspect the 2nd stimulus will also appear there, but there is limited information currently.
here is the IRS FAQ on the topic
A8. Yes, the IRS will continue to process 2019 tax returns and issue payments in 2020 to individuals who have not already received a payment and have not already been determined to be ineligible based on their 2018 tax returns.
If you are in this situation and eligible for an Economic Impact Payment based on your 2019 federal tax return:
If your return is not processed in time to issue your payment this year, you may be eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your 2020 tax return.
I amended my 2019 tax return to add my son and it was accepted recently by the irs(about 2.5 months ago) I filed already this year as well and still claim my son but I've gotten no stimulus for him at all. I couldn't even claim the rebate. I was told I have to write the irs asking for an updated form for such instances. But why didn't I get this stimulus still?
The missing amount should have been added on 1040 line 30. How old is he? If he turned 17 or older in 2020 he doesn't qualify for it. When was he born? If the IRS doesn't add it to your refund you might have to amend.
amending your 2019 return has nothing to do with the stimulus. it is confusing.
the basis of your credit is the info on your 2020 tax return. Plain and Simple.
if your child met the criteria for the first 2 stimulus payments (he was under 17 as of 12.31.20), then it'll appear on Line 30.
there is no form to write for. it the credit didn't appear on Line 30, he wasn't eligible.
ps the third stimulus is a different story. if he was a dependent on your 2020 tax return, you'll get the credit.
He did turn 17 in June... However..I received my 1400 stimulus and that was it. Nothing for him. I have my amended form for 2019 from the irs stating that they have accepted and changed my 2019 filing status to head of household. I filed the same filing status this yr... nothing
that is the way it works.
for the 1st two payments, the IRS used 2019 (or 2018) to ESTIMATE what you were due and sent out the stimulus payments. An amendment doesn't change that estimate
Then, the 2020 tax return determines what you are ACTUALLY does.
If the ACTUAL is greater than that ESTIMATE, the difference is on Line 30
if the ESTIMATE is greater than the ACTUAL, you do not owe the difference and Line 30 is 0.
in your case, your child was not eligible on your 2020 tax return for the stimulus payment because he was 17 years old in 2020.
Now for the 3rd stimulus, what was just sent out was the ESTIMATE. The rules changed and 17 year old dependents are eligible. So your ESTIMATE based on your 2020 (or 2019) tax return is $1400. But the ACTUAL when you fill out your 2021 tax return is zero (because he will be 18 in 2021).
And again, since your ESTIMATE is greater than your ACTUAL, you will not be asked to return the money.
there is nothing due you for your son on the 1st two stimulus payments and on the 3rd the taxpayer gets the payment - not the dependent, so your some won't get anything (as long as he is a dependent on your 2021 tax return).
I did. I sent mine back 4/17 and it was just processed 2/15. I got my letter of approval after I had already received the refund from them.
