A 16 year old is presumed to be a student and is your qualifying child dependent -- whereas a 19 year old might or might not be a qualifying child dependent. If your 19 year old is not a student they cannot be claimed as a qualifying child and might not be a dependent at all if they had over $5050 of income. Asking if she was a student helps to determine if you can claim a 19 year old as a dependent.
WHO CAN I CLAIM AS A DEPENDENT?
You can claim a child, relative, friend, or fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2024 taxes as long as they meet the following requirements:
Qualifying child
Qualifying relative
When you add someone as a dependent, we'll ask a series of questions to make sure you can claim them. There may be other tax benefits you can get when you claim a dependent.
Related Information:
Since the child is under the age of 19, it is not relevant if they are a student.
