wages from two different states-TN and NY

Hi!

I need some serious help with my taxes!! I moved out of NY 2/13/2020 to Tennessee.  I recieved 2 W-2's from NY,  1 W-2 from TN, and then a 1099 from Instacart(I also worked in TN for Instacart.)  I know I am considered a part-time resident for NY, but also for TN? and my wages for 2020 for NY was not alot at all, and the state tax withholding was extremely low for both jobs....I am just wondering how and why I am getting stuck owing SO MUCH MONEY!? Can someone PLEASE help me out!?

TN has no state income tax so you do not have a TN return to prepare or file unless you had income from interest and/or dividends---TN has a "Hall Tax" on interest and dividends.

We cannot see your tax return.  We do not know what you mean by "SO MUCH MONEY"  since we cannot see what you owe.    Make sure that on your federal return you indicated in My Info that you lived in NY for only a short part of 2020 and moved to TN.   You do have to file a NY return for the income received for the partial year while you lived and worked in NY.

There would have been no TN withholding from your checks from TN since there is not a state tax, but we cannot know if you had enough federal tax withheld from the W-2 jobs.  With self-employment income it is not surprising that you owe federal tax.

And the Instacart income is self-employment income which is subject to self employment tax for Social Security and Medicare, as well as ordinary income tax.

We cannot tell from your post what software you are using.   If you are using desktop --- the CD/download----- then any version can be used to prepare the schedule C you need to prepare for your business expenses for the instacart work,   If you are using online software you need Self-Employed   or possibly Free File if you qualify.   Free File can prepare a schedule C.

Try Free File:

You qualify if your income was $39,000 or less, or $72,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit
