Dear Forum, my Best friend and I have been using Turbotax 1040 Deluxe for many years to file our personal tax returns and family members' tax returns. I have 2 returns to file electronically. In the past I recall we could file up to 10 returns, but this year my partner tells me we are only allowed 5 electronic filed returns, and he has already filed 5!
Is this true? If so, what is the charge for filing electronic returns in excess of 5? How do I do it.
Quote in Turbotax Deluxe: "You've reached your e-file limit. The IRS only allows 5 returns to be e-filed with personal tax software."
I suspect the IRS does not limit any personal tax software to 5 files. Is it a Turbotax restriction, or an IRS limitation?

Five federal e-files is an IRS limit--not a TurboTax limit. If you have more than five returns to file, the additional ones can be prepared using the software but you can mail them.
The 5 e-files is an IRS limitation imposed on personal tax preparation software. It has been 5 e-filed ever since electronic filing using tax preparation software started.
The limit is, indeed, set by the IRS.
From IRS PUB 1345 —- limit of 5 e-files
