TurboTax 2024 will not update after 12 hours

Hello,

      I have seen many others complain about this issue, and no solution as to why the update downloading process is so slow (or not at all).  Turbo tax 2024 will not update on my Win10 computer.  Clearing cache isn't the answer (and it didn't help the other people with the issue).

I've finished my taxes days ago, but I cannot proceed to the "Review" stage because the program insists on doing updates.  When the Updates start, I get the Turbo tax 2024 updater pop-up window with "5 minutes" at the bottom, then it stops.  It's not just slow, it WON"T update.  I've left it running all night, and this morning it's still at "5 minutes" and there is ZERO progress made.

When I first installed the 2024 program, I had the same issue, so I manually downloaded and installed the "w_perrelsuperpatchIS_ttax_2024.exe" patch according to the support blog, waited a couple hours, and got my taxes done.  Now my taxes are done, but I can't go to Review or File because the program wants to do updates (and crashes),  I went back t the manual download 's the same file I've already downloaded...

This is the most trouble I've had with Turbo tax ever!

Not sure anyone here has an exact answer for you.....soem might suggest uninstalling TTX entirely, then getting a new installation file and re-installing it (might also require updating after that..but then it might start working.

Some folks using VPNs have been reporting some issues for similar problems...turn off your VPN (if you have one), and try updating after that.   

OR

Some 3rd party Virus scanners with their Firewall setting set on the highest level can block the updates too

      Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and for the ideas.  I had turned off my AVG firewall previously with no success.  Using your advice, I started turning off ALL of my computer's protections to see if that would work, and it did.  Here's what I ultimately had to do:

- Full COLD reboot (power off, come back 15 minutes later & start back up)

- Disable (AVG) Firewall

- Disable (AVG) Web Shield - note this has to be redone every 10 minutes

- Disable (AVG) Anti-Track

- Disable (Windows) Defender

- Disable (Windows) Firewall

- Start TurboTax and run Update Installer

The Update pop-up came on with the "5 Minutes" in the lower corner.  After about 8 minutes, the progress bar started to turn green [Hooray!]. 

After about 35 minutes, and repeatedly re-deactivating the Web Shield, the pop-up said "Installing updates --885934% completed" [huh?] and the number eventually ran down to zero.  Then the program restarted and FINALLY worked and I successfully files my Federal and State taxes.  

Thank you for the idea to go deeper in disabling my computer's protections.  As you can imagine leaving my computer completely vulnerable while online is very unnerving and if the Intuit admins are reading this [I hope], they will take user's firewalls into account and adjust their servers accordingly.

Without a doubt, this is the worst year ( 2024 ) for this application.  Nothing but problems. This morning I go to launch Turbotax 2024, it says needs to update.  Click update and nothing happens and the program closes.  Disable all firewalls still the same, reboot still the same. Had to save my tax files, remove application and re-install.  Horrible experience.  Will be looking for a new program in 2025.

Similar problem with not updating.  I went to the Intuit Turbotax website and got the update directly.  When it downloaded and updated I was able to open TT without needing to do the update when launching the program.  Seemed like a large update -- but this worked for me.

I am having the same problem. I have used Turbo Tax for years and never had an issue. I may have do do something different so I can get my taxes filed this year.

You may need to do a manual update. 

Try clearing your Cache and Cookies and then try this link instructions.

Thank you for the advice, but my problem has been solved, and for some reason, the "Best Answer" flag didn't stick.

Cleaning cache and cookies wasn't the problem.  The problem was (is) TurboTax's website will not allow computers with Firewalls or VPNs to access their site for updates.  To receive the update that TurboTax wanted before allowing me to complete my taxes, I had to disable everything that was protecting my computer:  Firewalls, VPN, ad-blocker, Windows Defender, etc.  Then it worked very slowly. 

Thank you for the advise.  It may help other users, but just not in my case.

I am SO disappointed with 2024 Premier.

I had a fail to update problem, which was directly caused by Windows 10 update changing my internet connection to Metered.  Updates worked correctly once this Metering was disabled.

I cannot post a screen shot of the error, so I will describe in in words.

Turbo Tax forces all users to run Windows 10 or higher.
The Metering function is easily checked with a system call.
It sucks that TT fails to make these basic environment checks at launch.
Instead, it posts the above cryptic message that leaves the average user totally clueless.

I will be, too.  I've been a TT user 20+ years.  Everything has been a problem.  I can't even e-file using Desktop. I have no attachment and both returns are small, individual returns.  Grrrrr
