Tax Year Prior to 2020: Can turbo tax complete a form 8962 for me?

I too filed on 1/31 and was accepted only to find out TT had a glitch and I have to submit the 1095-a along with form 8962 (I believe) and TT won’t even issue s refund for the $85 I paid.  Worst service ever!

Tax Year Prior to 2020: Can turbo tax complete a form 8962 for me?

This form was prepared by TurboTax in my 2018 return, but not in my 2019 return.  How can this be updated for a return already completed and accepted for 2019?  The IRS has written for it, and is waiting...

When you enter the 1095-A form, TurboTax will automatically generate form 8962.

If you already filed your return and it has been accepted, you need to amend to make any changes.

Here's how you amend your return:

  1. Sign in to your account.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents , select 2019 and then Amend (change) return
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Follow the instructions, your refund or tax due will change to 0. This is normal on amended returns.

Amended return can't be e-file, you need to print it and mail it in.

To report form 1095-A:

  1. Select Federal Taxes.
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Medical.
  4. Go to Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A)

See this TurboTax support FAQ for a Form 8962 and a Form 1095-A as requested by the IRS for 2019 - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/health-care/help/the-irs-is-requesting-form-8962/01/27409

Did you receive a letter from the IRS requesting the Form 8962?

@CatinaT1 Thank you!

Though I wasn't able to follow your instructions perfectly to solve this issue (probably because our federal and state returns were accepted), your guidance was the most helpful in getting there. I did click add a state, but I didn't have the magnifying glass/search available. I noticed on the left were the options under 2019 Taxes. I clicked on Federal, which allowed me to look at the Healthcare forms such as 1095-A. Though I didn't see 8962 right away after I completed the 1095-A information, the information was automatically filled out for 8962 and was able to print Form 8962 along with the rest of the federal return papers. Hopefully this helps some people who were struggling like me.

TurboTax changed the location for the entry of the Form 1095-A when Congress lowered the penalty for not having health insurance to $0.00.

For 2019 use these instructions to generate a Form 8962:

  1.  Sign In to Turbo Tax
  2.  Click Tax Home, in the upper left. Scroll down to Your Returns and Documents
  3.  If you do not see options under that heading, look to the right and click on Show
  4.  Make sure the correct year is underlined in blue
  5.  Select Amend (change) return and then Amend Using Turbo Tax Online
  6.  Do not click continue on the “We’ll help you change (amend) your return” screen. Simply go to the left menu and
  7. Click on the Federal and then
  8. Click on Deduction and Credits in the upper portion of the page.
  9. Scroll down and click on Medical, Show More.
  10. Choose Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A) by clicking on Start or  Revisit
  11. Enter your 1095-A form and generate an 8962 form.
  12. Click through the ACA section
  13. Select Tax Tools, on the left menu
  14. Select the Print Center
  15.  Print, save, or preview this year’s return and click in the box to select federal returns
  16. Click on View or Print Forms to print the forms you need
  17. You can view the forms from here and select just to print the pages with
  18.  Form 8962 and Form 1040 (if needed)

The instructions changed when using the 2019 online editions and are not the same as shown in the answer above -

  1. Sign into your account with the same user ID you used when you filed your 2019 return.
  2. Scroll down to the Your tax returns documents section and select Add a state.
  3. In the left menu, select Federal.
  4. Select Deductions & Credits from the top menu.
  5. You may need to answer a few preliminary questions to reach the Your tax breaks section. Once you get there, select See all tax breaks.
  6. Select Show more next to Medical.
  7. Select Revisit or Start next to Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A).
  8. Answer the questions about your health insurance, which includes entering your 1095-A.
  9. Select Tax Tools(found in the left menu), and then select Print Center below it.
  10. Choose Print, save, or preview this year’s return. You may need to enter info about your driver's license or other state ID.
  11. In the TurboTax Print Center, check the 2019 Federal returns box and select the Just my tax returns(s) option. Select View or print forms.
  12. We'll generate a PDF copy of your tax return. Save or print a copy for your records and label it so you know it's the latest version of your taxes. Print a copy of Form 8962 for the IRS. If your refund or balance due has changed, print Form 1040 too.
  • You can check if your refund changed by comparing line 21a on your original 1040 and the one you just printed. If you had a balance due, check line 23.

Send the following to the IRS address or fax number found in your IRS letter:

  • Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit
  • Copy of your Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement
  • A copy of the IRS letter that you received.
  • Only if the refund or owed amount has changed: also include page 2 of your 1040
