Under Retirement Plans and Social Security I click the update on Social Security (SSA-1099) and it thinks for a moment and then kicks me back to the Income Summary page. I went and checked on my 2023 turbo tax and it functioned perfectly. I tried opening SSA-1099 in forms but it doesn't appear. In 2024 it shows my previous year's income. It seems to be an error in the programing.
Can you let us know which version of TurboTax you are using?

I'd like to take a look to see if there's something in your return causing an issue. If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.
Please reply to this message with your token so that we can further assist you. Let us know all the states, if any, are included on the return.
I already completed this process with one of your agents with no success.
Since Social Security SSA -1099 has a $0 for 2024 already, it won't allow me to edit the correct benefit amount under RETIREMENT PLANS AND SOCIAL SECURITY. The UPDATE button will not bring up a way to edit the correct amount.
@jose37jr Click on View at the top of the desktop program screen. Click on Forms.
When in Forms mode open the Social Security Benefits Worksheet (Social Sec) on the left side of the screen in Forms mode. With the worksheet opened, click on Delete form at the bottom of the page.
Go back to step-by-step and you will be able to enter the SSA-1099 tax data.
I answered YES when the program asked if I earned retirement income from Social Security SSA-1099.
Next I attempted to enter my 2024 SSA income. I selected UPDATE for 2024, the screen flashed then returned to the same Personal Income page. NO window opened to allow entry of 2024 Social Security income. I just returned to the "Your 2024 Income Summary" window.
I have never had a problem like this with this program before. However, this is the first year I didn't use a CD to enter the program onto my MacBook Pro.
Please help.
Thank you.

Try selecting the Forms tab in Turbotax. Select the social security form. You should see the social security form appear. You can enter the information directly on the Social Security form in the Forms view. Then exit the forms view. You should see the amounts you entered for the current return appear when you go back to the easy-step/guided setting. I agree this is a new glitch in the 2024 Turbotax version, but the forms view can be useful anytime you feel like the guided version isn't working right.
For Desktop
If you are using the Desktop program, switch to Forms mode and delete the Social Security form that transferred over. Look for Social Sec in the left column, open it and click on Delete Form at the bottom.
Or see if you have supporting details listed. Either right click on the box on the form or go up to Edit - Add Supporting Details or click Ctrl+I (to insert) and when that box open click on Remove. Then go back to the Step by Step interview.

I check the Form Social Security Benefits worksheet and found I had a supporting details entry for Box 5 of Line A. I had listed the 2 different payment amounts from sums on the details. I removed the supporting details sheet and went back to the Step by Step and the interview process went forward as normal.
experiencing same problem. Step-by-step just didn't ask any questions relating to SS benefits. Trying to manually update under the "Investment Income" section has no results and screen returns to previous display.
Can you clarify? What version of TurboTax are you using? Is it for Mac or PC? You said you are trying to update in the Investment Income section, but did you mean the section titled "Retirement Plans and Social Security"?
Desktop Deluxe for PC. (I answered this question several times already.)

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
