I lost my 2022 tax files that I already filed due to my laptop crashed. I have the pdf file from 2022 and was wondering if I can retrieve my tax files (.txt) with the pdf file on my new computer. Thank you.

If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive. They are not stored online. If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

The tax data file does not end in .txt. They end in .tax2022, .tax2021 etc. They can only be opened by the Desktop installed program. Why did your laptop crash? Maybe the hard drive is ok and you can take it out to access the files on it. You can't open the pdf file in the program or convert a pdf file into the .tax2022 file.
If you used the Online version you can download the pdf and .tax2022 files again to the new computer.
How do you have the pdf file if the laptop crashed? Did you make backups? Have you searched for the .tax2022 file? Did you get the 2022 program installed and activated on the new computer?
See the answer to your previous post of essentially the same question.

Im tying to retrive my 2024 files I did in the desktop version. Since my Mac is older, I now have to use the online version. I can see my 2024 taxes (saved as PDF) but I don't see any "txt.tax" or anything similar on my Mac. I can open the taxes on Turbo Tax. Is there a way to save it so I can upload to the online version?
thanks
It’s actually your 2023 tax return from last year you need to transfer into this year for 2024. I know I always have trouble finding the previous year to transfer when I help my friend on her Mac (I’m a Windows person). I think I have to use Finder or it should be in your Documents. If you can open 2023 in the program then to save it on Mac you use Duplicate and note the name and where it put it.
How to transfer into the Online version, expand the link if you used the CD/download last year........

How to transfer into Turbo Tax Online, including from a pdf file or other software or from the Desktop program
I can find last years return, but It's only a PDF file. I can even open the document in Turbotax, but I don't see a way to save it as .txt. Thanks for your help!!
The Mac program doesn't show the .tax2023 at the end but it's there.
Find tax files on Mac. You might need to show extensions. I think Mac doesn't show the .tax2023 at the end.

I still can't find the files. I only see PDF files.
