Reporting more than $5000 of mutual funds donated as noncash charitable contributions on IRS Form 8283

I made a noncash charitable contribution of more than $5000 in index mutual funds in 2020 to a Vanguard Charitable donor advised fund or DAF. On the Charitable Donations section of TurboTax Deluxe 2020, the closest options I could find for "mutual funds" on the pull-down menu were:

  • "stocks" (no option for "mutual funds"),
  • "publicly traded stock" (for a Vanguard brokerage index mutual fund that is listed in the business section of newspapers) and
  • "average share price" (no option for "net asset value (NAV)")

Is selecting these "stock-based" options for mutual funds the only way to report donated mutual fund for IRS Form 8283 in TurboTax -- or is there another way?

Thank you.

all non-cash contributions of non-cash items of over $500 must be reported on form 8283.  I assume the mutual fund is a publicly traded security.  most Vanguard funds are listed on one or more American exchanges so they would be publically traded.  thus they get reported in schedule a part of the 8283.  you should have gotten an acknowledgment from Vanguard for the contribution. it's required in case the IRS were ever to inquire.

Thank you, Mike9241.

While everything that you said is true, my question has more to do with how to report these donated mutual fund shares on Form 8283 using TurboTax.

In particular, while I found a drop-down menu option for "stocks" and related stock-related options (e.g., average share price) in TurboTax's Charitable Contributions section, I have not been able to find a "mutual fund" option.

  • Should I select "stocks" in TurboTax to report these mutual funds?
  • Or is there another way for reporting mutual funds as charitable contributions in TurboTax?

Thanks again.
