Why when I filed my taxes it didn’t ask for my ip PIN number?

Donin's comment worked for us when submitting our return.  There were multiple help guides that said there was a 'Jump To' link in the help search.  These Do NOT exist (at least on the desktop web app).

Thanks Donin.

Why when I filed my taxes it didn’t ask for my ip PIN number?

From your answer and the fact you say you do test returns, I'm guessing your QA or someone who does a lot of these.   Please remember the I and most of the people doing this, only do this once a year, and the interface changes every year.    Now I just had this issue and when I started, I remember that it asked me if I had a Identity Protection Personal Id pin and I answered yes.   I had the sheet ready.   I never got a prompt.

"So while I was typing this, my return was rejected, and I was able to enter the pin and refile it.   A few notes, I went to that section, it was not highlighted, I had to hit the drop down.  It did not say revisit, like everything else I had to enter last year.    So this is not intuitive and is easy to skip.  Fortunately for anyone reading this, it rejects fast and is easy to fix. "

TurboTax should fix this.   I had one issue and now I get a CP01A every year, so if one was entered the year before, they should be able to tell that one is needed this year.

Why when I filed my taxes it didn’t ask for my ip PIN number?

I clearly clicked on the box that stated I am required to add an IP PIN. It had prompted me before in the past to enter the number received from the IRS. This time, it never happened. Very inconvenient! Now I have to wait for my return to be rejected and resubmit. :/|

When you used a DIY program  and you know you have an IP PIN to enter each year then do not file the return until you do.  Please save the instructions I gave earlier for future reference  ... copy it to a word doc and save it on your computer  or write it down  somewhere  since threads in this forum have a way of getting archived and removed.

Why when I filed my taxes it didn’t ask for my ip PIN number?

My Turbo tax e-file reject because I did not enter my ip PIN, where do I enter that in Turbo Tax for re-submit for efiling?

In Online TurboTax, here are 3 ways to get to the right place to enter the IP PIN.  You only need to use one method.   You can choose which method works for you the best.

  • Open the interview back up and click in the top right on the SEARCH icon.
  • Enter the term IP PIN without quotes.  When entering, ignore the dropdown menu, and instead click the small magnifying glass on that same line.
  • Then click on Jump to IP PIN.

Or here's a second way:

  • With your return open, click in the left menu column on TAX TOOLS, then choose TOOLS.
  • In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  • Enter the term IP PIN without quotes.
  • In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.

Or here's a third navigation method:

  • With your return open, in the left menu column, click Federal.
  • Then at the top of the screen choose  Other Tax Situation
  • If this is your first time in that section, answer the preliminary questions, and it may ask you if you have an IP PIN.  If so, indicate "yes", and keep following the screens as it guides you to enter it.
  • If it doesn't, such as if you've previously been in that section, click on "See all uncommon tax situations" to see all the topics in that section.
  • In the "Uncommon tax situations" list, scroll down to Other Return Info, and expand to see the subtopics, one of which is Identity Protection PIN.

It didn't ask me either - - but a "square" did pop up, asking if we had one, and I clicked Yes, but it never ask for the pin.  It is my personal experience however, If you OWE the Feds however, it doesn't matter.  They will process the forms, and take your money, no problem.  Now, if you get a Federal Refund - It very likely will cause you some grief and delay your refund dramatically.  TurboTax totally missed the boat on that one.  I give them a 5 out of 10 for that processing fopoo!

Really terrible experience that every year I get my return rejected because turbotax says im all set success! Then for it to get rejected because they didn't ask for my pin. YUCK! WHY!!

@kcaz25

If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file.  Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.

Why when I filed my taxes it didn’t ask for my ip PIN number?

They SUCK wind. Exact same situation with me...and it's April 2023. The software ASKED  ME if I had an IRS ID PIN (I do) and I so I said "yes". BUT THEY NEVER ACTUALLY ASKED ME FOR THE 6-DIGIT PIN DURING THE REST OF THE PROCESS...and it appears I filed my return without it.

This was less than obvious to find for the desktop software.  So in Home & Business 2022, click the "Search Topics" BUTTON at the top of the screen - NOT the 'Search' magnifying glass icon on the right (which only provides a solution for the online version, naturally).  A small window will open after clicking the "Search Topics" button, enter "IP PIN", then click the only choice in the results list, "ip pin".  This will jump you to the right place in the software, where you indicate someone has received the CP01A, and the next screen is where you enter the number.

If your return requires an IP PIN and you don't enter it, the return will reject and you can add it before re-filing.    How to add or remove an IP PIN
