In TurboTax Online Deluxe, I was able to create a 2020 Federal tax return and input a 1099-R into IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).
I was able to follow these steps.
Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
Across the top of the screen, click on Wages & Income.
At the screen Your income, scroll down to IRA, 401(K), Pension plan withdrawals (1099-R).
Click Edit/Add to the right.
At the screen Did you receive any 1099-R forms?, click Yes.
At the screen Let’s import your tax info, click on I’ll type it in myself.
At the screen Tell us which 1099-R you have, click on the appropriate choice.
Are you able to follow these steps in your version of TurboTax?

I am using Desktop Premium version, but steps are similar. Once I get to the step "Let Us Enter Your 1099-R" and select "I'll type it in myself" and then click "Continue" I am still getting the message "The Retirement Income Area Will Be Ready Soon" and my only option is to hit "continue" again and return to the "Your 2020 Income Summary".

You should be able to enter a 1099-R. Have you updated your program? If it's not updating in the usual fashion when you "check for updates", we can tell you how to check your release version and how to obtain a manual update. Are you using Mac or Windows?

You need to update your software to the latest release.
Click on Online at the top of the desktop program screen.
Click on Check for Updates
I thought I have been updating. But I checked again just now and when I tried to open the State, it said it was going to donload it and now 15 min later it still says waiting for updater. I assume perhaps I haven't been paying very close attention and it looks like it finishes but hasn't been running at all. In Help/About it says I'm on version [number removed].
FAQ: How do I update my TurboTax software program?
Although you can update over a wireless or dial-up connection, it's best to use a wired, high-speed connection to speed things up and minimize the possibility of data corruption.
Simply select Check for Updates from the Online menu in TurboTax (Windows) or quit and reopen the program (Mac). If new updates are available, you'll get a message to download them.
If you get disconnected while updating, try again and our update will pick up where it left off.
Windows users: Download a manual update if you're having trouble updating from the Online menu.
The problem is with getting the updates to install. I downloaded the manual downloaad file, it failed the first time, so I followed instructions to restart and then it did say it successfully installed. But when program started again it wanted to do an update. Looked as if it was working, green bar advanced about halfway and then just went to program. But when I tried I still couldn't enter 1099-R so I imagine it failed. Not sure what to try now.
Try disconnecting from the internet then turn off your antivirus before trying the manual update again. If you still have issues contact support ...

After installing the manual update, close the program interface and restart your computer.
If no success after that, then if you are using the Windows version, see if a repair of TurboTax helps.
See subject. Same problem applies to me.

This is a thread from January. The 1099-R interview has been available for some time. What is your situation and issue? Are you using desktop software (CD/download), and for Windows or Mac, and what operating system?
If you are using desktop software, have you updated your software?
I've had no problems. Make sure you have the latest update. You should get an automatic update everytime you open the program. BTW - have filed and already received refund with no problems.
I cannot enter 1099-R and 1099-B data because message says IRS has not completed this capability. When will this capability be able to update to my Turbotax CD system?
You need to update your software. I have already filed and received my refund.
Here is a link with instructions on updating the TurboTax CD Software.
