WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY? I WANT THE FREE EDITION
The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now. Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's. Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition. Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez If you started in the Free Edition and entered any data that required any of those three schedules, you have to upgrade to a paid version. The Free Edition cannot be used for self-employment income, investment income, rental income or a student loan interest deduction,

If you qualify to use it, there is another full-featured free version of the software:
Try Free File:
You qualify if your income was $39,000 or less, or $72,000 or less if active duty military, or if you qualify for Earned Income Credit
https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1900583-what-is-turbotax-free-file-program
Note: If you do not qualify to use Free File then you will have to upgrade to Deluxe or higher in the paid versions of the software.
Online Deluxe $40 State software $40
Or—-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free
https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
If your TurboTax fees are higher than expected, you can reduce them by removing add-ons:
I don't know what 212 would be for. Deluxe is 60 federal 50 state. Even if you needed Self Employed version it is 120 federal 50 state. Unless you were adding on the Live expert help feature.
You can enter Self Employment Income into Online Deluxe or Premier but if you have any expenses you will have to upgrade to the Self Employed version. Or use any of the Desktop CD/Download programs. You can see the Desktop programs here,
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/
The Desktop programs have more features and advantages over the online version.
How to enter income from Self Employment
Or There is also The Turbo Tax Free File program which is free for federal and state. And has more forms than the Federal Free Edition, like Schedules A, B, C , D, E, F, EIC, H, K-1, SE, etc.
To qualify for the Free File website you just need to meet one of these 3 things.
AGI $39,000 or less.
Active duty military with AGI of $72,000 or less
OR qualify for EIC (earned income credit.)
In order to use the Free File program, you have to start it at a special website. Try signing in at the top right.
I guess I'm just confused because I wasn't self employed and I'm not a student or anything. I don't even have health insurance information to enter in. I only entered in my W2 and 1099.
visit the IRS at https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free
to find truly free filing. Note that some include free state as well.
Otherwise, If you have to file a state return, and don't want to do that yourself, you will need software that you pay for.
If you choose TurboTax (don't know why you would), you must create a new account.
If you sign in with your existing account, you'll be back in the same place you're trying to escape.
If you have manually typed in your W2, make sure that you've entered the Box 12a ~ 12d correctly.
I made a mistake of putting "A" for the 12a code and "B" for the 12b, instead of actual code letters (A, AA, B, BB, etc). That messed up my whole federal income tax refund (Turbo tax actually told me I owe 2k in tax, but after correcting this, I got a sweet tax refund instead!)
So just in case, check your reported W2 section and make sure all amounts and letters for 12a/b/c/d are correct.
It's not completely clear what might be taking place, but it's possible you had 'allocated tips' on your W-2. Check out Box 8, if this has an amount then you are paying medicare tax and social security tax for these tips which would be creating 'additional and other taxes' (Form 4137). This would trigger an upgrade to a higher version of TurboTax: See TurboTax versions and Tax Forms for each (scroll to Tax Forms section)
Allocated tips are amounts your employer assigned to you in addition to the tips you reported. Your employer is required to allocate tips only if:
Generally, you must report the full amount contained in box 8 of your Form W-2. However, you don't report the entire allocated tip amount on your income tax return if you have adequate records to show that you received less tips in the year than the allocated amount. You should keep a daily record of all tips you receive from customers and from other employees who tip out to you and the amounts you tip out to other employees. If you don't have records or if you have inadequate records, you must report the full amount in box 8 as income on your income tax return.
