Instead of the & sign use the word "and".
I can't use the word AND as that is not the name of the company I work for. I've already had something like this happen before and the IRS will not accept my taxes unless the employer name is correct. This error needs to be reported to the TurboTax programmers in order to fix their software. But how can I do that?
You can use the word "and"-----all the IRS cares about is the employer's EIN.
Or just leave the & sign completely out.
Using Turbotax 2021 Deluxe with Oklahoma state download.
Calculation for Schedule 511-NR-B line 6 Other retirement income is blank. Retirement Exclusion Worksheet shows Line 1 blank. The Federal Retirement Amount is not being copied to the worksheet. As a result, Line 8 is not showing a $20,000 exclusion. Filling in the Oklahoma state online forms shows the correct amounts. Turbotax is not providing the best refund!
Try the universal solution "Run as Administrator" (?)
When I enter an RMD amount in the 1099 information space TurboTax repeatedly deletes the RMD entry when I scroll away to the next page. This results in a "review" pop up when I return to the beginning of the1099 information section. This continuous cycle of repeated deletions by TurboTax is disconcerting leaving me concerned that the RMD amounts may never be retained by the program.
I believe all this is due to a software error.
Turbotax 2021 Home and Business miscalculates the charitable contribution deduction when filing married jointly with standard deductions. When you run error check, it calls up the Charitable Contribution Worksheet Line 12B with a $300 entry.
When I type in the correct amount ($600 for married filing jointly since we contributed $1000 in cash last year) it fixes the problem. But then the next time you run error check, it changes it back to $300. And then it points out the error again. No matter how many times I fix the problem, error check keeps changing it back to $300.
So there is no way to file taxes without using the workaround and submitting them with an error identified by your error check.
Try this fix from @ReneeM7122:
"Delete the $300 in the error check. Then go back to Deductions & Credits and enter the contribution there, in the Donations to Charity topic. Then click Done with Donations and proceed through the screens until you get to the screen that tells you that TurboTax has added in the contribution.
The contribution should be back on Form 1040 line 10b, but it won't be flagged as an error. It only gets flagged if you enter it when prompted after you finish Deductions & Credits and the software tells you that you are getting the standard deduction. It will not get flagged if you enter it in Donations to Charity."
Thanks. But that doesn't help....in fact, that is how I originally entered the contribution.
I deleted the $300 from the 1040 worksheet. Then I deleted the $1000 charitable contribution. I ran error check again and it showed no error.
I re-entered the contribution as you described. Ran error check, and Turbotax again had entered $300 instead of $600, and flagged the $300 as an error.
Thanks again for the suggestion, though.
Hmmm...I am running TurboTax Premier for Windows Version 021.000.0407 and only see this error if I entered a Charitable Donation in the Deductions & Credits section and only eligible for the Standard Deduction.
To remove the error I went into Forms mode and deleted the Charitable Organization Worksheet. Then on the Form 1040 Worksheet for Line 12b removed the $300 amount so Line 12b is now blank (empty).
Going back to Step-by-Step I completed the Deductions & Credits section without entering anything for a charitable donation and click on Done with Deductions. Continuing through the screens until landing on the screen labeled Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act, I entered $600. Continued through Final Review without error.
For the TurboTax online editions -
The problem appears to be that a charitable donation was entered in the Deductions and Credits section of the program when you are only eligible for the Standard Deduction.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen
Click on Tools
Click on Delete a form
Scroll through the all the forms, schedules and worksheets listed and delete all the Charitable Organization forms listed.
When completed with removing forms click on Continue With My Return at the bottom of the list.
Click on Federal on the left side of the screen
Click on Deductions & Credits at the top of the screen
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Wrap up tax breaks
Continue through the screens. After the screen showing that you are getting the Standard Deduction the following screen is Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act. Enter $600 if filing Jointly or $300 for all other filing status'. The federal review and the Final Review should no longer show an error for the charitable donation.
I'm using TT Home and Business version [phone number removed]. I have the standard deduction, married filing jointly status, and a cash charitable contribution of $1000.
I repeated all of the steps you mentioned, but I never saw the screen Charitable Cash Contributions under Cares Act. I did run all the way through the step-by-step for Deductions section until the end. TT then ran through the error check and everything was okay and I could have moved on and filed.
However, when I went back and re-ran error check, the same problem came back. As soon as I clicked Run Smart Check it recalculated the tax owed and then showed the error message pointing to the $300 entry on line 12b.
Thank again for your assistance.
Not sure why it says "phone number removed". Point is, I am running the same version number as you. 021.000.0407
@CKooistra Did you delete the Charitable Organization Worksheet that had the $1000 entered as a donation and also removed the $300 on the Form 1040 Worksheet for Line 12b? That has to be done so there will not be any type of charitable donation entered in the program.
Then go back and complete Deductions & Credits without entering anything for a charitable donation.
Yep, did it several times and it would not stick.
