I am attempting to efile an amended 2020 tax return (in January 2022). Turbotax premier 2020 allows me to go through all the steps of efiling, but when I submit it says that my signature date (01/18/2022) is not valid, that the date must be in 2021.
Is this a bug, or does TurboTax not support eFiling an amended 2020 return in 2022?
Are you filing an amended return, 1040X ,or are you using software for a 2020 1040 (original return)?
Did you e-file the original 2020 1040 using TurboTax or did you mail in the original 2020 tax return?
I think you have to print and mail 2020 amended return. Just ignore any error messages. They might let you efile it when the IRS opens Efiling on Jan 24. You can wait and see later.
You can e-file your 2020 1040X return this year. In previous years they had to be mailed. VolvoGirl mentions the date (Jan 24) the e-filing will begin this year in the post above.
Here's an article that will explain more about e-filing your 1040X.

Are you certain the information in the link (above) is still relevant?
The Article's date is July of 2021 when a 2020 return could still be filed through the extension date.
It is my understanding, however, that once the e-file period closes, an amended return cannot be e-filed with TurboTax for a prior year.
@Anonymous_ It is our understanding that beginning in 2019, prior-year returns that have been e-filed and accepted through TurboTax may, in fact be amended and e-filed through TurboTax. This does not change that original returns that are filed after the tax year has closed may not be e-filed through TurboTax. This TurboTax blog has additional information on this: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/amend-return/how-to-correct-federal-tax-returns/L67t0F7il. It can be noted that the "Tips" page is updated as of January 8, and we are anticipating that our Help Articles that were produced for prior years will soon be updated to reflect this information.

Yes, thank you, @DanielV01. That is a source of confusion with respect to e-filing original and amended returns.
You're welcome @Anonymous_. We had to research this ourselves, but glad to provide some additional clarity.
Thank you for this information. Given this, I am back to my original question/issue:
I successfully efiled my 2020 tax return (in 2021) using TurboTax premier 2020. I am now attempting to efile an amended 2020 tax return again using TurboTax premier 2020. Turbotax premier 2020 allows me to go through all the steps of efiling, but when I submit it says that my signature date (01/18/2022) is not valid, that the signature date must be in 2021 (and the payment date for any taxes owed must also be in 2021).
What is the problem? Is this a bug?
Thank you again!!
As we said you have to wait until the IRS opens Efiling on Jan 24. Try again after Monday. Let us know if it lets you.
@slawso If it does not let you, please reach out, and we can provide additional information.
As of 20 January 2021 at 1:06EST I cannot find Schedule 3 of 1040 in Turbo Tax Deluxe 2021 edition. Is this coming in future updates? Yes, I have performed the "Check for Updates" within the software.
In the TurboTax Deluxe program I tested, Schedule 3 does appear.
In FORMS mode, use the 'Open Form' icon at the upper left to pull it up.
If you are unable to do so, you could try uninstalling/reinstalling your program and updating (clear cache & cookies first.)
Schedule 3 is where certain nonrefundable credits are reported. These credits are the child and dependent care expense credit, foreign tax credit, education credits, residential energy credit, retirement savings contribution credit and other general business credits.

The name of my employer is S&S MACHINE, INC but when I enter or upload my W-2 info, TurboTax changes the name to S&S MACHINE, INC. How am I supposed to change it to the correct name? If it is not correct, most likely the IRS will reject my taxes.
