AGREED. This is our last year using it. I've never had this issue but always felt like it wasn't actually helping us. Also the problem that tax laws have changed to benefit the rich so for the past 2 years, we've owed when we don't even make much money. Super cool. But then getting to the end and charging $100 when I selected all free stuff is annoying. There was never a time I said "yes" to any additional/deluxe thing. It kind of pushes you to do it without knowing so that when you're all the way at the end, it feels like it's too much to go back and do it yourself for free. It's awful and an absolute scam.
Never using Turbo Tax again.
They ream you! they keep tacking on fees. There should be a clearly stated, upfront disclosure of what you can and cannot do, and expect to be charged, with the different packages. Additionally, the fees to file electronically should be posted upfront. Finding all of this out as you work your way through completing the form is more like entrapment -- especially when you get to the point of efiling and learn that there is an additional 40,00 fee per form (State and Fed). Next year I will NOT use Turbo Tax.
MAY I FINISH my TAXES PLEASE
@BrendaMartin99 Yes you can file 2020 until Oct. 15, 2021. Are you stuck somewhere? Have you started 2020?
Click on Add a State to let you back into your return.
From Tax Home (the first screen you see after you sign in), scroll down to Your tax returns & documents. You may have to select Show to open the drop down.
Select 2020, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this is just the workaround).
2020 taxes in 2021 free and every year prior 'til my memory fades... so started my 2021 in 2022 and something seemed different. Then i realized it was the fact that I was to get "live" help. I found that strange so I checked and confirmed NO COST. In fact it stated $0.00. So. I went on answering the questions. Got to the point where I was to receive "live" assistance. I chose to make an appointment for about an hour away because I was stating to get a headache. About five minutes before my appoint with a "live" tax assistant- a picture of the person who would be calling {Alesia} appeared on the screen. Then, my appointment time came and went. I poked around and found a place to chat with Alesia. I sent her a message asking if I would be receiving a call. I cant explain well what happen next, however, all the sudden I was not logged in. When I logged in there was no record of all the work I had done. Even the documents I uploaded were gone. And, well, you guessed it $0.00 was replaced with $39.99. Seemed scammy but I thought the hours I spent I could stomach $39.99 so I went to the chat area to find out why I never got a call and why my uploads were gone. Alesia's picture was gone replace by some gentlement. When finally my chatting reached a human I pposted my inquiry. His reply, I don't know Im just an agent. My reply to him and to you all at ScrewedbyIt: "Enjoy the rest of your day!" Hope y'all follow my example and never return to these predators!
Be aware that the online TurboTax Free Edition is very limited to only simple returns--so be careful----if your return requires any of the schedules or extra forms then an upgrade to a paid version will be required. https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/
There are still eight various software providers who will participate in the Free File program ...

@mikero Sounds like you had logged back into to a different account.
It's common to end up with multiple accounts. First LOG OUT of whatever TurboTax account you're logged into right now. Then use this TurboTax account recovery website to get a list of user ID's for an email address. Run the tool against any email addresses you may have used
