The tax documents that you should receive depend on your situation and the types of income you received in 2020.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of documents:

  • Form W-2 if you are an employee
  • Form 1099-NEC if you have self-employed income
  • Form 1099-G if you received unemployment benefits
  • Form 1099-INT if you received interest from a bank
  • Form 1099-DIV if you received dividends
  • Form 1099-R if you took distributions from a retirement plan.

Another option you will have is to get a transcript of your account from the IRS.  In mid- to late-February you should be able to see any 1099s issued to you or your spouse for joint returns online.  Here is a link that will help. You will want a "Wage and Income" transcript.

Thank you for your answer. I need to make joint tax return. My husband passed away in September, and until now I have no  communication with the banks where he had accounts. They are simply not answering  my emails.

I have no idea how I will make tax return without that info.

I am not expecting that bank employee are going to make tax return on his bank account 🙂

The bank(s) will be mailing out Forms 1099-DIV and/or 1099-Int to his address on file showing year end amounts earned.  Those are what you will use to file your tax returns.  Expect to receive those forms around 31 January.  We are so sorry for your loss.

Thank you. I am not sure, I will get them, as I am in EU, not in U.S.

He was showing his address in U.S. in bank files.

And those letters , if they are by post (USPS) , I will not get.

Only if they will send  by e-mail.

But as far as I know , banks still use letters.
