I purchased Deluxe. It was supposed to include one state efile. You charged me when I efiled my state return. Why?

I would like an answer to this too and don't plan to file until I do. Because of changes with the IRS and calculating Student Loan Interest payments, I essentially had to buy Deluxe to receive the credit even though I didn't want to. Now I'm on the filing page and it's charging me an additional $40 to file my state taxes, totaling $80! This is the most expensive tax filing I've EVER had and by all appearances-my purchase of Deluxe SHOULD include the state filing...

This happened to me as well and I'm trying to get the phone number for support to get a refund for the $40 extra it charged me for the state but it won't accept any question keywords having to do with billing, return purchase etc.

For any billing issues, you would need to contact customer support by phone:

@Maryegan517 To clarify, you are trying to e-file your state return? What link did you receive? There is no fee to e-file. The charge is for the software program to e-file or mail your return.

I am not sure exactly what issues you are having, so I have listed a few articles below, that will hopefully rectify your situation:

There is also a known issue and is being worked on.  See below for a possible workaround and a link to sign up for notifications about the resolution.  When attempting to e-file a return in the TurboTax for Windows CD/Download software, this message appears:

There is an update available for your version of TurboTax. Before you can file electronically, you’ll need to get this update. To do this, go to the Online menu and select Check for Updates.

However, after updating, the same message continues to reappear, resulting in an endless loop.

    Workaround

Some customers have been able to successfully e-file with this workaround:

    1. Follow the steps in the article Troubleshoot TurboTax for Windows updating issues.
    2. Now try e-filing again. If that didn't work, first uninstall and then reinstall your TurboTax program.
    3. Finally, if you're still unable to e-file after following the above steps, you can either sign up to be notified by email when a fix has been released, or you can file a conventional paper return.

If you used the "Pay with my Refund" service, please see the TurboTax FAQ below. This may be the charge you are seeing.

Why is my direct-deposited refund or check lower than the amount in TurboTax?

The problem for myself is I purchased TurboTax Deluxe + State from Amazon and when I get to the state it wants to charge $39 before I can even start to view/enter my state. For me I had to call turbotax support [phone number removed] and explain. They had me create an account and gave me a download for my state which now works.
