Reinstall TurboTax for Windows 8.1/10/11

Select the version of TurboTax Desktop you have for instructions on how to reinstall for Windows.

  1. Turn off antivirus, VPN, firewall, and any third-party security software you have running. Disconnect any USB external hard drives.
  2. Download a new copy of TurboTax software (if you are using a download):
    • Go to My Downloads and sign in to your TurboTax account.
    • Select Downloads and find your download.
    • Select Copy Code and Download for Windows.
  3. Close your web browser.
  4. From your desktop, right-click the Start icon and select File Explorer.
  5. Find Downloads and select the file you just downloaded.
  6. Right-click the file and select Run as administrator.
  7. On the User Account Control box, answer Yes to Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?
  8. On the License Agreement, check I accept the terms of the license agreement, and select Next.
  9. On the, Here’s what your installation will look like, select Install.
    • You can uncheck Sure, count me in!
  10. On the Success! Ready to start your taxes? screen, select Launch TurboTax.
  11. On the Let's install the latest updates screen, select Update TurboTax20xx.
    • If TurboTax doesn't start, double-click the TurboTax icon on your desktop.
    • If your TurboTax icon has a shield, double-click to open TurboTax and skip to step 12.
    • If your TurboTax icon doesn't have a shield, right-click on the TurboTax icon and select Properties. Choose the Compatibility tab and check Run this program as an administrator. Select Apply and OK.
  12. On the Successful Updates screen, select Continue using TurboTax 20xx. TurboTax will try to restart.
    • If it doesn't, double-click the TurboTax icon on your desktop.
  13. On the License Agreement screen, select I agree.
  14. On the TurboTax 20xx Activation screen, select the License Code box and use CTRL + V to paste in your license code. Select Activate TurboTax.
  15. On the TurboTax 20xx Activation - You're all set screen, select Get Started. You're ready to start using TurboTax.
  1. Insert the TurboTax CD into the CD drive.
    • If a message appears, select Cancel, No, or press ESC to exit.
  2. Hold Windows and R simultaneously.
  3. In the Run window, select Browse, and locate your CD-ROM drive.
  4. On the TurboTax CD, select the Setup.exe file, then Open.
  5. Restart your computer.

  3. Find and select the ckz_ folder (example: ckz_H1XF). If there's more than one, select the most recent folder. Right-click and select Cut.
  4. Right-click on a blank area of your desktop and Paste.
  5. The ckz_ on folder should now be on your desktop.
  6. Double-click to open ckz_.
  7. Right-click on Setup and select Run as administrator.
  8. On the User Account Control box, answer Yes to Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?
  9. On the License Agreement, check I accept the terms of the license agreement and select Next.
  10. On the, Here’s what your installation will look like, select Install.
    • You can uncheck Sure, count me in!
  11. On the Success! Ready to start your taxes? screen, select Launch TurboTax.
  12. On the Let's install the latest updates screen, select Update TurboTax 20xx.
    • If TurboTax doesn't start, double-click the TurboTax icon on your desktop.
    • If your TurboTax icon has a shield, double-click to open TurboTax and skip to step 13.
    • If your TurboTax icon doesn't have a shield, right-click on the TurboTax icon and select Properties. Choose the Compatibility tab and check Run this program as an administrator. Select Apply and OK.

    • If it doesn't, double-click the TurboTax icon on your desktop.
  14. On the User Account Control box, answer Yes to Do you want to allow this app to make changes on your device?
  15. On the License Agreement screen, select I agree.
  16. On the TurboTax 20xx Activation screen, select the License Code box and use CTRL + V to paste in your license code. Select Activate TurboTax.
  17. On the TurboTax 20xx Activation - You're all set screen, select Get Started and continue through to use TurboTax.
