Problem importing 1099s from Schwab when financial POA for another person

I have financial POA for my mother so her accounts and tax documents appear when I log into my Schwab account. This presents a problem when I import my tax documents into TurboTax.  TurboTax is importing ALL the tax documents (mine and my mothers) into my taxes even though my mothers tax documents are clearly not in my name.  My solution was to delete my mothers imported tax documents in TurboTax.  Can we get TurboTax software to handle this properly and only import tax documents in my name? This is a problem for anyone that is a financial POA for another person with Schwab (and maybe other brokers).

I was startled when TurboTax showed I had underpaid my taxes by a large amount!  As I investigated I realized TurboTax was adding my mom's imported 1099's into my taxes on top of my own.

You may be able to check with your broker and see if the settings can be adjusted on their end to only allow certain documents to be imported. If not, in your case, you will need to make manual entries. TurboTax will import everything in a linked brokerage account.

 Here's how to enter a 1099-DIV

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. Search for 1099-DIV and select the Jump to link in your search results.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you receive any dividend income?
  4. Manually enter your 1099-DIV  by selecting I'll type it in myself.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter your 1099-DIV.

Here's how to enter a 1099-B:

  1. Open (continue) your return if it isn't already open.
  2. In TurboTax, search for 1099-B and then select the Jump to link in the search results.
  3. Answer Yes to Did you sell stocks, mutual funds, bonds, or other investments in 2019? If you see Here's the info we have for these investment sales, select Add More Sales.
  4. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-B or brokerage statement for these sales?
  5. At Let's get your tax info, choose the option to type it in yourself.
  6. Follow the instructions.

Problem importing 1099s from Schwab when financial POA for another person

I had this exact same problem. However, I cannot figure out how to delete my mom's 1099s from my TurboTax Premier 2020 taxes form.  How does one delete a form that imported?  Thanks!

Yes.  You may delete an imported form in Turbo Tax.  To delete a form:.

  1. In the left menu, select Tax Tools and then Tools.
  2. In the pop-up window Tool Center, choose Delete a form.
  3. Select Delete next to the form/schedule/worksheet in the list and follow the instructions.
