Pay Federal amount due with a credit card

Preparing to pay the Federal amount due at the same time as I efile.  I had planned to pay with a direct withdrawal from my checking account.  But that doesn't seem to be an option.  Therefore, I am considering paying with a credit card.

Just below the credit card information screen, there is a note that states,

"Must efile federal return.

$40 Return processing service fee"

Does that mean there is a $40 fee to pay with a credit card?

If so, I'd just mail a personal check for the actual amount after efiling.

thank you!

If you are using the TurboTax desktop editions, in the File section of the program when you have taxes owed there is an option to use Direct Debit from your bank account.

DO NOT select the option to have any TurboTax account fees paid from your federal tax refund since this will have you pay a $40 service charge.

Yes, TurboTax offers the option to deduct your TurboTax Full Service fees from your federal (not state) refund. This option is called Pay With My Refund (also known as Refund Processing Service), and there's a $40 processing fee charged by the third-party bank that handles the transaction.

Do you have a federal tax due?  That shows you are getting a refund.  You can only have the Turbo Tax fees deducted from a federal refund but there is an Extra $40 Refund Processing Service charge (45 in California) for that so try to pay the fees with a credit card to avoid the extra charge.

Since you don't seem to have a federal tax due are you asking about paying a state tax due?

Pay Federal amount due with a credit card

You responses have helped me better understand !!

I owe Federal $1,200.  So the $40 issue becomes moot since there is no refund.  I owe no state tax so it seems the $40 charge was to be able to use $25 of a Federal refund to pay for the state return efile.  I believe that is correct.  So, if I had a Federal amount due, I could choose to spend $65 total to efile state or does the $40 fee include the $25 charge?

I had chosen the direct withdrawal from my checking account option to pay the Federal amount due.  So I think I have to use my credit card to pay the $25 fee for State filing and there is no additional fee to do so.  And there is no option to have the $25 withdrawn from my checking account.

Am I close?  thank you so much for your expertise and help !!

Pay Federal amount due with a credit card

You can pay the $25 state e-file fee with your credit card, there is no additional fee to do so.

OK!  Federal and State efiled.  Direct charge to checking account for Federal due and CC paid $25 to efile state.

Thank you!!

It's confusing.  You should not have been offered the extra $40 charge to have the $25 state efile fee deducted from a federal refund since you have a federal tax due.  Something doesn't seem right.  But glad you got it filed and only paid the $25 with a credit card.
